City enters its annual ‘no mow’ period
The drive will run from August to the end of November at specific public open spaces, to allow for spring flowers and a variety of indigenous plants to bloom and seed.

A comprehensive list can be found on the link https://bit.ly/3yiJHbW

The aim is to protect ecological processes that promote the growth of distinctive Fynbos vegetation.

A number of public open spaces (POS) are conservation corridors, connecting to other open spaces, conservation areas, nature reserves and national parks, ensuring a healthy network of interconnected environments.

When flowering, the areas will display fields of colour with a variety of spring flowers, which residents can enjoy.

'The mowing debate gathers momentum at this time of year, and we love the passion and enthusiasm from all involved. The City has identified public open spaces, parks, greenbelts and road verges that are home to sensitive vegetation. These are the areas that will not be mowed over the next few months. Residents also have the opportunity to advocate for spaces in their communities to be added to the no mow list. I do want to remind everyone that any such application will require the support of their neighbours and broader community,' said Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Patricia Van der Ross.

Flowers are essential to the pollination process of most seed-producing plants.

During this time, a variety of birds, butterflies, moths and bees are also on display.

The 'no mow' drive also highlights the City's efforts to adopt a more environmentally friendly and sustainable mowing practice in Cape Town.

The Recreation and Parks Department will commence its mowing schedule at parks and public open spaces at the end of November 2024, once the endemic flowers have produced adequate seeds.

Residents can submit applications to halt mowing in their specific areas in writing to RP.Enquiries@capetown.gov.za

End

2024-08-05T22:00:00ZGP0|#1d539e44-7c8c-4646-887d-386dc1d95d70;L0|#01d539e44-7c8c-4646-887d-386dc1d95d70|City news;GTSet|#62efe227-07aa-45e7-944c-ceebacca891dGP0|#68c4f1e6-ecaa-448f-af9b-d20905ece7db;L0|#068c4f1e6-ecaa-448f-af9b-d20905ece7db|Recreation;GTSet|#2e3de6c1-9951-4747-8f53-470629a399bb;GP0|#c6a441ef-9e58-44aa-9d6d-34f86540448c;L0|#0c6a441ef-9e58-44aa-9d6d-34f86540448c|Parks10
