City enforcement agencies arrest 147 suspects in a week

The City of Cape Town’s Metro Police Department arrested 33 suspects in the last week – 13 for driving under the influence of alcohol in Philippi and Fish Hoek and 20 others on various charges including possession of drugs, stolen property, reckless and negligent driving, domestic violence and assault, and possession of illegal firearms.On Wednesday 5 April 2017, members of the Equestrian Unit reacted to a ShotSpotter alert in Thames Walk, Manenberg just before 03:00. Initially officers found nothing, but widened the search area and spotted someone carrying a backpack. Officers conducted a stop-and-search and found a homemade firearm with a 9 mm round of ammunition in the backpack. They arrested a 21-year-old suspect.On Monday 3 April 2017, Metro Police responded to a shooting incident in Pecos Way, Manenberg. Officers received a tip-off about where the shooter had dumped the firearm while making a getaway. They found a 9 mm Star pistol and a magazine abandoned in Lilian Walk. The items were booked as abandoned at the Manenberg police station.On the roads, the City’s Traffic Service arrested 94 suspects and issued 1 388 fines for various transgressions in the last week. Those arrested included eight suspects for outstanding warrants, five for reckless and negligent driving, and 86 for driving under the influence of alcohol. Operations in Delft, Simon’s Town and Fish Hoek netted the highest number of arrests, with 20 and 17 respectively.Meanwhile, the first weekend of Operation Exodus saw staff checking 168 buses, midibuses, minibuses, and trailers at public transport interchanges. A total of 137 vehicles passed the roadworthy tests. In addition, vehicle checkpoints under the auspices of Operation Exodus resulted in 20 arrests – 12 for drunk driving and eight for reckless and negligent driving – and the issuing of more than 2 200 fines. ‘We’ll be ramping up Operation Exodus together with general road safety enforcement in the coming days. The Easter weekend is a very bad time of year where road safety is concerned and we are doing everything in our power to rewrite the narrative. I appeal to the motoring public to cooperate with law enforcement agencies, but also to apply a healthy dose of common sense when they hit the roads this weekend,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security; and Social Services, Alderman JP Smith. <figure class="figure-credits right"><img class="responsive" alt="placeholder" src="https://resource.capetown.gov.za/cityassets/Media%20Centre/learners.jpg" style="width:509px;" /><figcaption> © City of Cape Town </figcaption> </figure> On the lighter side of law enforcement, the Metro Police Department hosted another child safety day camp at the Princess Vlei Eco Park (see photo above). The children, aged between 6 and 11 from Philippi and Mitchells Plain, were educated about their rights, child abuse, bullying, peer pressure, domestic violence, and water safety. The officers also focused on teaching the children how and when to use the City of Cape Town’s emergency number. The children were entertained by the K9 and Equestrian Units. End
