City encourages diabetes testing and healthy lifestyle choices on World Diabetes Day<p>​​In support of World Diabetes Day, which is observed annually on 14 November, the City of Cape Town will host a range of activities to encourage residents to be proactive and make healthy lifestyle choices under the global theme: Eyes on diabetes. <br><br>The key message for this year’s campaign is to raise awareness about the importance of screening, to pick up diabetes early, and to reduce the risk of serious complications.<br><br>Diabetes is a silent killer as most people are not aware that they may be living with the disease. <br><br>According to the World Health Organisation, diabetes is listed as one of the top 10 causes of death in the country and the contributing factors are listed as obesity, unhealthy diets and a lack of physical activity.<br><br>It is estimated that globally that one in two adults with diabetes are currently undiagnosed, with this number constantly increasing.<br><br>Studies show that awareness and key lifestyle changes such as being active and eating a healthy, balanced diet can prevent who those at risk from developing diabetes.<br><br>Early detection and treatment is therefore crucial and residents will be able to visit several sites across the city to get screened for diabetes especially during this week. <br><br>City Health has introduced screening for diabetes at its clinics where we can calculate clients’ body mass index and do blood sugar tests.<br><br>To mark this global event tomorrow, the City’s Health Department has planned informative health talks and screening events in the sub-districts across the city to promote awareness of diabetes. The screening and health talks will take place at the following venues:<br></p><ul><li>​The Ikhwezi clinic in the Eastern District has planned a number of events for 14 November 2016. Join them in the Lwandle Community Hall from 09:00 to 14:00<br></li><li>In the Western District, the Factreton, Protea Park and Albow Gardens Clinics will provide health talks and blood glucose screening throughout the week<br></li><li>At the Tafelsig Clinic in Mitchells Plain, a diabetes programme is planned for 15 November 2016<br></li><li>In Khayelitsha, there will be talks on diabetes on 14 November 2016 at the Kuyasa Clinic, and on 15 November 2016 at the Luvuyo Clinic<br></li><li>In the Northern District, both the Scottsdale and Durbanville Clinics will be providing talks during the week, as will the Kraaifontein Day Hospital<br></li><li>In the Klipfontein District, on 19 November 2016 there will be a health and wellness day at the NY116 Stadium in Gugulethu. This will include a variety of healthy screening services, including testing for diabetes<br></li></ul><div>In the new year, the City plans to launch a Healthy Lifestyle Programme to support those with or at risk of developing diabetes and other often related chronic conditions, such as heart disease and hypertension and/or those who just want to be healthy and active and need motivation and support to start maintaining a healthy lifestyle. <br><br></div><div>We appeal to residents to get tested for diabetes because many people with diabetes show no symptoms and go undiagnosed until they develop diabetic complications.
