City councillor assists resident to secure final resting place for beloved horse
On Wednesday, 9 December 2015 Cllr Nora Grose of Ward 23 received an urgent message from a resident regarding the disposal of a horse carcass at a municipal drop-off site. Upon further investigation, it was discovered that the resident wanted to arrange for a more dignified burial of her much-loved horse (pictured inset) but was initially prevented from doing so due to the requirements of the City’s environmental health and safety by-laws.

Cllr Grose then petitioned the Cllr Ernest Sonnenberg, the responsible Mayoral Committee member, and the Mayor to waive the by-law requirements on compassionate grounds to allow the owner to arrange a private burial. The request was approved and the owner, with assistance from Solid Waste Management department officials and workers, was able to exhume the carcass on the morning of Thursday, 17 December.

The horse was subsequently interred at a site which allows for natural decomposition using a green burial process. The resident, Linzi Cowley, expressed her gratitude for all the assistance she received from the City, from her ward councillor and the City’s executive to the Solid Waste Management team at the municipal drop-off site, who all went the extra mile to ensure that she was able to secure a more dignified burial for her beloved horse.

Cllr Grose said that she was delighted to be able to facilitate a happy resolution to the resident’s request, in what was for her clearly a very emotionally significant act. Wherever possible, the City will do what it can to accommodate residents' needs.

2016-01-21T22:00:00ZGP0|#e3c03ac1-845c-4119-815d-e796340463ba;L0|#0e3c03ac1-845c-4119-815d-e796340463ba|Community news;GTSet|#62efe227-07aa-45e7-944c-ceebacca891dGP0|#1596e104-b1e8-47f6-9db5-263896676e0a;L0|#01596e104-b1e8-47f6-9db5-263896676e0a|subcouncil;GTSet|#2e3de6c1-9951-4747-8f53-470629a399bb;GP0|#fe1372cc-3168-4376-b201-0a8a04d6081e;L0|#0fe1372cc-3168-4376-b201-0a8a04d6081e|by-law;GP0|#b0438f6c-eaf4-415c-bee1-2df5bb8fe0ef;L0|#0b0438f6c-eaf4-415c-bee1-2df5bb8fe0ef|health care waste1
