City building in Macassar damaged by fire<p>‚ÄčA group of protesters entered the Housing Office earlier today and started a fire in the building. The reason for the protest is unknown at this stage. City staff in the building managed to escape unharmed, and reported the incident to the South African Police Service in Macassar where a case was opened. </p><p>Computer equipment, furniture and office records were destroyed in the fire.</p><p>Although officials stationed at the housing office sustained no injuries the City will make counselling available to those who were traumatised by the event.</p><p>Additional access control measures will be put in place to ensure the safety of staff. </p><p>The City is currently quantifying the total cost of damage.</p><p>The senseless destruction of City assets is unacceptable.
