City awards financial support bursaries to promising young leaders

The City's external financial support awards are intended to provide support to promising young members of the community who have demonstrated potential to take their studies further. This year, over 900 applicants competed for the bursaries via a competitive process that took into account financial need, academic results, interview performance as well as the City's staffing strategies. A total of 50 awards were granted to deserving candidates, of which 17 were in the fields of civil and electrical engineering. The programme aims to fill the scarce skills gap by supporting study in these essential fields. 'Our vision is to be a City of Hope for all, where we can create more opportunities for the young leaders of tomorrow. To foster economic growth, we need to see more young people lift themselves out of poverty through educational opportunities, and the City of Cape Town is proud to be able to lend a hand in supporting our awardees to achieve their study and career goals, and thereby help to uplift their communities. We congratulate them on their success so far, and wish them every success in the future,' said the City's Mayoral Committee Member for Corporate Services, Alderman Theresa Uys. The City currently has 64 bursars at various stages of completion of their studies, and the addition of our 50 new candidates raises this total to 114 bursars. End
