City attends WasteCon 2022 to learn best practises on waste minimisation towards zero waste to landfill <p>​</p><div>The event was organised by the Institute of Waste Management South Africa (IWMSA), and showcased the latest developments, technology, and best practice in the waste management sector.</div><div> </div><div>This year’s theme was ‘Back on track – perspectives on waste and circularity’, and the proceedings included various discussions and presentations on how South Africa can progressively facilitate a circular economy, given our unique challenges and social context.</div><div> </div><div>We were exposed to various alternative waste treatment, diversion technologies and strategies that could potentially be incorporated into Cape Town’s Waste Strategy and Sector Plan. Advances in leachate treatment were of particular interest, and lessons from the event will significantly assist in tackling some of the challenges the City experiences in this area.  </div><div> </div><div>The proceedings at WasteCon have given us a lot to think about.
