Reminder: City advises of upcoming critical electricity work in Newlands and surrounds

The City’s Electricity Generation and Distribution Department reminds residents in parts of Newlands and surrounds of upcoming critical electricity upgrades to Newlands Main Substation. The remaining work will be carried out over four days between 25 May and 13 June 2024.

Please note that the Newlands maintenance scheduled for 28 May 2024 was postponed to Thursday, 13 June 2024. The City apologises for any inconvenience caused. Read more below:


Due to the complex nature of the infrastructure work, supply will be interrupted and the time of restoration may be delayed by a few hours. Our teams will work as quickly as possible to complete all upgrades within the communicated times. 

The electricity infrastructure upgrades will be carried out between 25 May and 13 June 2024, if all goes to plan. To view the area outage maps, visit:

The interruptions will only affect the highlighted area on the maps. 

Please note:

The electricity supply could be restored at any time and customers must please treat all electrical installations as live for the full duration of the interruption. Residents are encouraged to switch off appliances as a precaution and to avoid damage caused by power surges when the power comes back on.
