City SAP graduate has a flair for information systems
Having completed the SAP utilities module, Bronwen Maans now works in the City’s Enterprise Resource Planning Department as part of a support team on a system that assists residents in emergency and non-emergency situations.

‘This is a great example of how information technology can be used to improve or even save someone’s life. I was fortunate to have been exposed to SAP in the telecommunications industry and realised then that it is a scarce skill. My plan was to study at a later stage in my career when I could afford it. I am thankful to the City for the opportunity to pursue my career in SAP so soon,’ said Bronwen.

© City of Cape Town

Bronwen completed a Bachelor of Administration degree with majors in public administration and information systems, as well as a post-graduate Bachelor of Commerce degree, majoring in information systems at the University of the Western Cape.

She is quick to point out that the undergraduate degree was not what she really wanted to study but in hindsight she found the one subject that she truly enjoyed: information systems.

‘I took a long time to finish my undergraduate degree due to my failures along the way. But I was determined to finish what I started. I was fortunate to have had extremely knowledgeable lecturers and guest lecturers which helped me tremendously. I also had the opportunity to feed off the knowledge of my peers. The majority of my fellow part-time students worked in the IT field and one actually owned an IT company, so the insights I gained from my classmates were invaluable,’ added Bronwen.

She is one of 15 graduates who were employed by the City after obtaining highly sought-after SAP qualifications through the Western Cape Skills for Africa training programme.

‘My goal is to work hard and learn as much as I can in order to excel in my chosen career path as a SAP consultant. I would advise my peers to be committed and dedicated to your studies and enjoy what you are doing. Be patient and don’t expect to earn a high salary from the start. The best place to learn is at an entry level and that knowledge provides you with a sound foundation to help you learn and grow,’ says Bronwen.

© City of Cape Town

‘It is wonderful when young people are so focused on their careers and are working hard to achieve success in their lives. I would like to warmly welcome Bronwen to the City of Cape Town and trust that she will have a long and successful career with us. I hope she will inspire others to pursue their studies in SAP and information technology. My message to young people is that we will make such opportunities available, but it is up to them to take up the challenge and make a success of their careers. Hard work just makes you stronger and young people need to grab such partnership opportunities.

‘The City is proud to be partnering with the private sector on this job creation initiative. One of the biggest benefits of this training is that it caters for a business need that makes the graduates immediately employable. We are pleased to have taken 15 of the graduates under our wing. Such training opportunities are crucial for our future generation, to provide them with much-needed scarce skills,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Corporate Services and Compliance, Councillor Xanthea Limberg.

End
2016-12-01T22:00:00ZGP0|#1d539e44-7c8c-4646-887d-386dc1d95d70;L0|#01d539e44-7c8c-4646-887d-386dc1d95d70|City news;GTSet|#62efe227-07aa-45e7-944c-ceebacca891d;GP0|#ec796ef5-2baf-48fb-86c2-54dbc1fd30d7;L0|#0ec796ef5-2baf-48fb-86c2-54dbc1fd30d7|Achievements and awardsGP0|#ba75ce07-5890-4642-bef4-17cfad9c5484;L0|#0ba75ce07-5890-4642-bef4-17cfad9c5484|Bronwen Maans;GTSet|#2e3de6c1-9951-4747-8f53-470629a399bb;GP0|#049bc2a5-5cd6-4543-9833-2997124169fe;L0|#0049bc2a5-5cd6-4543-9833-2997124169fe|Sap skills for Africa;GP0|#6a021589-3687-4fd4-9da6-5764eb305e07;L0|#06a021589-3687-4fd4-9da6-5764eb305e07|SAP consultant;GPP|#9ff55fbf-2ab8-4213-904a-07a01a242d031
