Cape Town the 9th best city in the world, according to Condé Nast Traveller readers

This is the latest of several top listings for the Mother City, with the global Timeout.com brand giving Cape Town the 11th spot in its '53 best cities in the world' list.

In its write-up of Cape Town's 9th-place listing, Condé Nast noted the 'pristine beaches', and 'world-renowned hotels'.

'These awards bring with them significant global attention and spectator value and come at a crucial period as we head into our peak visitor season.

'Locals have long known that Cape Town is a triple A-rated city, which in this instance refers to accommodation, attractions and aviation, signalling the strength of our destination value.

'In all three categories, we are recording fantastic recovery numbers with even better figures projected for the coming months. Between November and December, we are expecting 184 international flights per week. This will increase to 191 flights per week between January and March next year. This amounts to approximately 1,56 million two-way seats between November 2022 and March 2023, generating a whopping R7,9 billion in tourism spend.

'This is the result of hard work by the City and its partners to connect with more key source markets, and clever campaigns such as Find Your Freedom from Cape Town Tourism (CTT), our official Destination Marketing Organisation,' said Alderman James Vos, the City's Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth.

This interactive concept allows users to choose an avatar – a Fearless Foodie, Nature Warrior or Urban Adventurer – for a virtual taste of Cape Town. The interactive travel experience is a first-of-its-kind for a destination marketing organisation aimed at increasing bookings and highlighting unique Cape Town experiences.

'At the same time, we are helping local businesses to connect with tourists by giving them the training to shape their operations for this market. For example, CTT has rolled out a Neighbourhood Experience Development training manual to help guide SMMEs in developing their businesses and to encourage neighbourhood readiness. CTT also hosts business development workshops and networking events for their 1 000-plus members and the City of Cape Town further supports entrepreneurs with business services and a series of free upskilling classes,' said Alderman Vos.

The City also works closely with tourism industry bodies and partners, including SAPS and the Cape Town Central City Improvement District on the ground, to facilitate year-round programmes focusing on the prevention of tourist and visitor safety incidents through community, stakeholder and enforcement engagements, and to implement the use of technology to ensure a safer Cape Town.

'We have already, with the help of the Western Cape provincial government, deployed 1 300 extra Law Enforcement officers focused on the 13 worst crime hotspots in the city and more recently we added to the existing Visitor Safety Unit a further 100 extra law enforcement officers supported by a first-of-its kind integrated nerve centre in Cape Town CBD which has been doing excellent work tackling contact and property crime in the CBD and surrounding suburbs. We are confident that the next released quarterly crime stats will show a vastly improved situation ensuring that visitors enjoy the safety they expect and deserve when they visit our city.

'We will continue to invest in even more Law Enforcement officers, and equipment, and vehicles to make every Capetonian and visitor to the city feel safer,' said Alderman JP Smith, the City's Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security.

'We will also focus single-mindedly on growing the economy so that more people can get into work and out of poverty while working around-the-clock to attract more visitors with clever campaigns and travel connections,' said Alderman Vos.

End

2022-10-06T22:00:00ZGP0|#1d539e44-7c8c-4646-887d-386dc1d95d70;L0|#01d539e44-7c8c-4646-887d-386dc1d95d70|City news;GTSet|#62efe227-07aa-45e7-944c-ceebacca891dGP0|#0f794aab-8ac2-46f6-8dda-f97adf1462bd;L0|#00f794aab-8ac2-46f6-8dda-f97adf1462bd|tourism;GTSet|#2e3de6c1-9951-4747-8f53-470629a399bb;GP0|#4bcb251f-1166-4a1c-8ee5-d33721046dec;L0|#04bcb251f-1166-4a1c-8ee5-d33721046dec|law enforcement10
