101 arrests for City enforcement agencies<p>​The City of Cape Town’s Metro Police Department arrested 62 suspects in the last week on charges relating to firearms and ammunition, drug possession, and drunk driving. <br> <br> In Bonteheuwel, officers recovered 76 rounds of ammunition and four magazines after receiving a tip-off from a member of the public about firearms and ammunition hidden in an electricity box in the area on Tuesday 12 January 2016. The find included ammunition for AK-47, R5 and R1 assault rifles.</p><blockquote cite=""><p> ​<em>"The use of heavy artillery in some of the areas experiencing gang conflict is becoming more commonplace and bears testament to the level of organised crime involved. These types of assault rifle are not found at any gun store and I believe that efforts to find and cut off the supply line would not only make the streets safer, but would also give the police who are mandated to investigate these crimes the evidence to start tracking down the big players."</em> <b>Alderman JP Smith</b> <cite>City Mayoral Committee Member: Safety and Security</cite></p></blockquote> A suspect was arrested during stop and search patrols in Hanover Park after being found in possession of five rounds of ammunition for a .38 revolver, while another suspect was arrested in Elsies River when he was found in possession of a revolver that had been reported stolen in Rondebosch. <br> <br> Metro Police also arrested 22 suspects for possession of drugs. They confiscated drugs with a street value of R10 000 during a joint operation with the South African Police Service in Delft. In Bellville, the K9 Unit pulled over a VW Polo near the bus terminus. With the help of her sniffer dog, the officer found ecstacy tablets, tik and cocaine in the vehicle, along with nearly R2 500 in cash. <br> <br> On Wednesday 13 January 2016 at approximately 15:20, a traffic officer on patrol in Ottery noticed a VW Golf driving past. He observed that the driver looked nervous and so decided to turn around and pull over the vehicle. <br> <br> On inspecting the vehicle, the officer found that the licence disc had expired, the tyres were smooth, the vehicle’s number plate did not correspond with details on ENatis and the driver did not have a driving licence. It then emerged that the car had been stolen in Mowbray. A search of the vehicle revealed keys for different types of vehicle as well as drug paraphernalia.
