Urban Mobility Summit 2023<span> <h2 class="sectHeading">Overview​​​​​​​</h2></span><span> <div class="notification with-heading dark-copy pink bg-light-grey"><div class="graphic with-border"> <i class="info remember">​​​</i> </div><div class="desc"><h4>livestream<br></h4><p> We're excited to offer a livestream of the Summit, allowing you to participate in the discussions by posing questions to the panellists. <br><br>Join the livestream on <a href="" target="_blank">Youtube<i class="icon link-external"></i></a> or <a href="" target="_blank">LinkedIn<i class="icon link-external"></i></a>.<br></p></div></div></span> <p> The Urban Mobility Summit 2023 will include a series of panel discussions on topics relevant to the City of Cape Town administration, public transport stakeholders, as well as Cape Town’s residents and commuters using private vehicles, non-motorised transport, or public transport. <br></p><p> A range of role players and decision-makers in the transport industry have been invited to share their knowledge, skills and expertise. <br></p><p> <a href="" target="_blank">Access the full list of panellists</a>.<br></p> <p>Topics will focus on the importance of mobility, the current challenges in this sphere, and the associated impact on Cape Town’s residents, the local economy, the cost of living, and the cost of public transport – in particular to low-income households who spend up to 43% of their monthly income on commuting. </p><p>As such, the topics cover challenges of local and national public concern and interest, including the devolution of the passenger rail function to the City, the formalisation of the minibus-taxi industry, and the impact of extortion, intimidation and crime on the City’s efforts to deliver construction projects in hotspot areas in particular. </p><p>The summit will also create a platform to discuss the state of transport and mobility in Cape Town and highlight opportunities and creative solutions.<br></p> <span> <h2 class="sectHeading">What to expect</h2></span> <h4>Welcome and unveiling</h4><p> <strong>Lungelo Mbandazayo, City Manager, City of Cape Town</strong><br>The City’s efforts to take the lead in addressing challenges of local and national public concern and interest.</p><h4>Opening address</h4><p> <strong>Geordin Hill-Lewis, Executive Mayor, City of Cape Town</strong><br>The City’s reform agenda for public transport: How efficient, affordable, safe and reliable public transport can build a City of Hope, grow our local economy and spur job creation.</p> <span> <h2 class="sectHeading">Programme highlights<br></h2></span> <p>The topics for the panel discussions seek to address the mobility challenges the City, stakeholders, public transport service providers, commuters and South Africans face on a daily basis.<br></p><h4>Key discussion topics:<br></h4><ul><li>Devolution of the passenger rail function to the City; </li><li>Putting people first in transport spaces when private cars dominate development; </li><li>The formalisation and modernisation of the minibus-taxi industry; </li><li>Sustainable mobility; </li><li>The impact of extortion, intimidation and crime on the City’s efforts to deliver construction projects in hotspot areas in particular; and </li><li>Urban mobility solutions in a complex environment.</li></ul><p></p> <span> <div class="infographic bg-font-adjust-bg">​​​​​​​​​​ <figure><img src="" alt="placeholder" class="responsive" /></figure><figcaption> <p> <strong></strong> <span class="infoGraphicSpan"> <strong>URBAN MOBILITY SUMMIT 2023</strong></span><br>​​<br>Download the programme.<br></p> <a href="" title="title" class="btn dark-blue" target="_blank"> <i class="icon download"></i>Download PDF</a> </figcaption> </div></span><span> <h2 class="sectHeading">​​​​​​​​​​Innovation showcase <br></h2></span> <p>The following departments will showcase innovative design, technology and engineering solutions that enable mobility:<br></p><h4>Transport Shared Services<br></h4><p>We provide centralised support services, including business systems and information, communication, customer relations, change and stakeholder management and human resources. We play a key transversal role in helping the Urban Mobility Directorate to achieve its objective of being well governed, compliant, service oriented, customer-centric, and data and performance-driven.</p><h4>Transport Infrastructure Implementation</h4><p>We are a capital-led department that is responsible for the detail design, procurement, construction management, monitoring and delivery of new road infrastructure, as well as the upgrading of existing road infrastructure, including non-motorised transport (pedestrian and cycling) facilities, and public transport infrastructure and related facilities.</p><h4> Transport Planning and Network Management </h4><p>We are responsible for developing the City’s strategic transport planning, the design development of the associated infrastructure for all modes, the development of transport-related policies, as well as the management of transport regulations. We also design, build, operate and maintain the City’s extensive traffic signal network, and facilitate and develop the road network. <br></p><h4> Roads Infrastructure Management </h4><p> We are responsible for managing and maintaining the road network, including road resurfacing and maintenance of the stormwater system, informal road networks, public transport roads infrastructure, non-motorised transport networks and street furniture within the road reserve. </p><h4> Public Transport </h4><p> We oversee a wide range of responsibilities related to public transport, including contract management for the MyCiTi bus and Dial-a-Ride services. Our duties include fare collection, public transport facilities management, public transport enforcement, and transitioning the industry towards efficient public transportation solutions.
