City attends to high volume of cold front related electricity service requests

Storm and load-shedding related electricity outages are being experienced in areas across the city

Storm and load-shedding related electricity outages are being experienced in areas across the city. Eskom's load-shedding has also contributed to the number of service requests due to nuisance tripping among others, when the lights are switched back on. The City encourages residents to make use of the correct service channels to report outages via SMS and email. Residents are reminded to only use one reporting channel and not log multiple requests as duplication causes delays. Trees affecting power lines, infrastructureThe City dedicates resources to trim trees and vegetation on its property so as to reduce the risk of outages caused by trees encroaching onto power lines and infrastructure. Property owners are also encouraged to safely maintain their trees and vegetation. Stormy weather usually contributes to an increase in power outages, especially where tree branches grow over and into overhead power lines. Residents should contact professionals for assistance where the work is too dangerous or difficult to perform. The City of Cape's Urban Waste Management Cleansing Branch is ramping up efforts to help prevent flooding and pollution of rivers and waterways that comes with the arrival of winter rains. With the first heavy rains a lot of litter and green organic waste are washed into storm drains which then causes blockages and floods, or ends up flowing out into our rivers/vleis and eventually the ocean. This year UWM is spending R48 million on its Winter Readiness Programme which runs five days a week, Monday to Friday, and with teams working eight-hour shifts daily. 'We ask residents to please keep in mind that littering is one of the main causes of flooding during winter rains. When litter is dropped on the street it can be washed into drains and can cause a blockage that could flood a road or people's homes. 'While UWM is doing what we can, our residents also have a part to play to help reduce the risk of flooding. Don't dump, rather please use the solid waste services provided to get rid of your waste. We further urge communities to take part in clean-up campaigns as it is all our responsibility to keep Cape Town clean,' said Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Waste Management, Alderman Grant Twigg. The City of Cape Town’s Mobile Office is bringing its customer relations team to residents to assist with a wide range of municipal enquiries and service requests

The details are as follows: <ul><li>Tuesday, 6 June 2023, from 09:30 to 13:30 at the Scottsdene Hall, Eoan Avenue, Scottsdene, Kraaifontein</li><li>Thursday, 8 June 2023, from 09:30 to 13:30 at the Westlake United Church Trust Hall, 48 Westlake Drive, Westlake The intention is to take customer services to the communities that are far from municipal facilities. The City's Customer Relations Department's mobile team will assist residents with logging queries and service requests electronically. Customers can engage with the City in a wide range of non-emergency enquiries such as rates, sewerage, electricity, water, refuse collections, and all other account enquiries. To date, the mobile office team has been very effective in resolving long outstanding queries for residents. 'The City is bringing services to the residents to afford them the opportunity to enquire and to solve issues in the comfort of their own area. I encourage residents to take full advantage of this opportunity and to get the answers that they need about their general municipal matters,' said the City's Mayoral Committee Member for Corporate Services, Alderman Theresa Uys.
