Informal housing waste services<h2 class="sectHeading">​​​​​​​​​​​Plastic bag collection and cleaning services​​​​​​​</h2> <p>If you live in an informal settlement, the City will provide two blue waste bags per week as well as collection and litter picking/cleaning services to your household. </p><div class="notification with-heading dark-copy pink bg-light-grey"><div class="graphic with-border"> <i class="info note">​​​</i> </div><div class="desc"><h4>Please note</h4><p>Do not buy the BLUE waste bags on the street. By buying these blue bags, you deprive our community waste collection service and contribute to illegal dumping. Report any individual/shop selling blue refuse bags to <em> <a>021 900 1689</a></em> or email <em></em> <em> <a href="mailto:riaan.truter@capetown.gov.za">riaan.truter@capetown.gov.za</a></em></p></div></div><p> <strong>How does the service work?</strong><br>Every week, we will come door-to-door and collect your full bags, as well as give you two new ones. To help create jobs, contractors recruit people from the <a href="https://www.capetown.gov.za/Family%20and%20home/Meet-the-City/City-Council/Find-your-councillor-ward-or-subcouncil">subcouncil database</a> within the community to help with street cleaning and litter removal.</p><p> <strong>Tips for blue bag users </strong></p><ul><li>If you miss the contractor’s collection day, take your bag to the shipping container or the waste storage area (the contractor’s collection point).</li><li>Don’t leave your full bags on the ground or any place dogs or rats will be able to open them.</li><li>Don’t dump your waste in canals or open areas. This is <a href="https://www.capetown.gov.za/local%20and%20communities/community-health-and-safety/healthy-environment/prevent-illegal-dumping">illegal dumping</a>.
