City invites young Capetonians to apply for the Junior City CouncilThe Junior City Council (JCC) is a non-political programme run by the City which aims to expose secondary school learners<div>The Junior City Council (JCC) is a non-political programme run by the City which aims to expose secondary school learners in Cape Town to the working of the City Council. The programme offers young learners from grades 10-11 the opportunity to develop:</div><div><br></div><div><ul><li>Key leadership skills</li><li>Community project management skills</li><li>Broaden their knowledge of local government in the context of Cape Town and</li><li>Cultivate a culture of active citizenry through ensuring they become ambassadors within their communities. </li></ul></div><div><br></div><div>The programme will run over six months and will accept two learners per subcouncil in the City of Cape Town. This will ensure that the programme is inclusive of the realities of junior councillors as they represent their respective communities. Proposed conversion of Brushwood Road in Bridgetown to a one-way open for commentThe proposal is to turn Brushwood Road into a one-way to allow improved traffic flow.<p>​</p><div>The proposal is to turn Brushwood Road into a one-way to allow improved traffic flow. The proposed one-way will flow north from Loerie Street and exit at Cornflower Street. </div><div><br></div><div>The City’s Transport Network Development Department received numerous requests for this conversion and has conducted an investigation to determine the feasibility of the proposal.</div><div><br></div><div>‘Upon investigation, the team established that residents have difficulty accessing and exiting their respective driveways along Brushwood Road and that the narrow road does not actually allow for two-way traffic. The team also found that there were two blind spots along this road which raised concern. Residents encouraged to comment on Bellville’s futureThe City of Cape Town hosted an Open Day about the proposed local spatial development framework (LSDF)<p>​</p><span><p>‘On Saturday, myself and officials from the City’s Urban Catalytic Investment Department assisted attendees with more information about the City’s proposed long-term spatial vision for the Bellville CBD. This was a great opportunity to engage with us and I must say I was impressed with the attendees’ contributions and interest. The intention of the LSDF is to spatially transform the Bellville CBD into a more sustainable and thriving centre with the City, public partners and private sector all contributing to this effort.</p> <figure class="subtopic-fullsize-img"> <img src="https://resource.capetown.gov.za/cityassets/Media%20Centre/belville%20new1.jpg" class="responsive" alt="" style="width:869px;" /> </figure></span><span><div>‘I cannot stress enough how important it is to get involved in this participation process as once the LSDF is approved by Council, it will have a profound impact on all who live and work and do business in Bellville. MyCiTi service now offering more frequent buses on busy routesThe City will be making a number of improvements to the inner-city routes of the MyCiTi service<p>​</p><div>‘One of the great advantages is that the City of Cape Town is in charge of the MyCiTi service which is a reliable, safe and affordable alternative for those commuters where we currently are operating routes. Over the past few months we have noticed an increasing demand for the MyCiTi service. We anticipate that the demand will continue to grow as we improve our offering, and also as the cost of fuel is forcing more private vehicle users to opt for the service.</div><div><br></div><div>‘The MyCiTi planners at the Urban Mobility Directorate have looked into how and where we can respond to this growing demand and they came up with a number of  improvements that will allow for more frequent buses along our busy routes within the inner-city, ensuring that there are enough buses to get our commuters to their destinations in the quickest possible time. We will keep on monitoring commuters’ travelling behaviour and will tweak our planning so that we can align our service with commuters’ expectations. This is to also ensure we make the service as convenient and reliable as possible,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.</div><div><br></div><div><strong>As of Saturday 28 May <strong>2022 the following changes will take effect in response to growing passenger demand: </strong></strong></div><div><br></div><div>Additional buses will be added to the inner-city routes including the 101, 111, 103 and 104 routes. Passengers using these routes will now enjoy more frequent services:</div><div><ul><li>Routes 101 and 111 will each improve from a service every 60 minutes to every 24 minutes on weekday mornings and afternoon peaks. This means that there will be a bus every 12 minutes for the many passengers who can use either route. </li><li>Route 103 will improve from a service every 70 minutes to a service every 24 minutes throughout the day on weekdays and every 35 minutes on weekends. </li><li>Route 104 will improve from a service every 70 minutes to every 20 minutes, all day on weekdays and every 40 minutes on weekends. </li></ul></div><div><br></div><div><strong>Route 116 will be discontinued and replaced with an improved route 104:</strong></div><div>The weekday peak-only 116 service will no longer operate. It will be replaced with an improved route 104, which connects the Waterfront Silo to the Civic Centre station every 20 minutes, all day on weekdays. Passengers can also conveniently travel beyond the Waterfront Silo to the Waterfront station and on to Sea Point without changing buses on route 104. </div><div><br></div><div><strong>Changes to route 104  </strong></div><div>The 104 Sea Point – Waterfront – Adderley – Gardens – Oranjezicht route will be adjusted to travel from the Waterfront Silo on the current 116 route path to the Civic Centre station where it will terminate. The revised 104 Sea Point – Waterfront – Civic Centre route will, therefore, no longer serve Adderley station or travel onward to the inner-city, Gardens and Oranjezicht areas. <br><br></div><div style="text-align:left;"><ul><li>Passengers on the adjusted 104 route, including those travelling between Sea Point and the Waterfront can now enjoy a bus every 20 minutes all day long. </li><li>Passengers at Adderley can still connect with Oranjezicht via route 103. </li><li>Passengers at Adderley station can connect with the Waterfront station on route 113 or catch a route 104 bus from Civic Centre station to Waterfront Silo. </li></ul></div><div><br></div><div><strong>Removal of the Clocktower stop</strong></div><div>The temporary Clocktower stop at the Waterfront will be removed from the MyCiTi network. Passengers can make use of the preferred Waterfront Silo stop nearby, this will also reduce travel time for passengers on route 104 by avoiding the extra stop.  </div><div><br></div><div><strong>New stop for Atlantis</strong></div><div>A new stop will be introduced in response to community requests close to the intersection of Meermin Road and Nicobar Street in Atlantis. The Nicobar stop will provide easier, quicker and safer access to MyCiTi services in the vicinity, serving routes 232 and 244, and connecting with the nearby Atlantis station where passengers can change to other routes to reach their destination.</div><div><br></div><div>‘We are confident that these changes will improve the convenience of the service, while reducing commuters’ travelling time. We encourage residents to please continue communicating with us by sharing their ideas or raising matters they would like to bring to our attention.
