Our teams will work as quickly as possible to complete the work within the communicated time. Aunty Doris turns 100

Doris Barrish Johnson-centenary birthday

Aunty Doris, as she is fondly known, has lived all over Cape Town. She stayed for 30 years at the Rainbow Lane Pensioners Cottage in Silvertown before moving in with her son and daughter-in-law in Athlone. Her favourite places in Cape Town include St Georges Cathedral and the Company’s Garden. She also loved taking her children to Kalk Bay beach by train and to visit Camps Bay beach. <figure class="subtopic-fullsize-img"> <img class="responsive" src="https://resource.capetown.gov.za/cityassets/Media%20Images%202/DSC_1946.jpg" alt="" /></figure> Her children shared that she loved making rotis and taught everyone who was interested how to make them. She even sold some of her popular rotis, hanging up her apron at the age of 92. Her secret to long life is smiling every day, and doing good deeds for others. Cape Town’s anti-litter TV ad campaign takes flight

The City of Cape Town is bringing anti-litter messaging back to the airwaves with a new TV and digital media ad campaign.

The commercial uses cutting-edge digital production to show the rip-roaring journey of a piece of litter being passed between Capetonians, before it is sportily binned under the tagline ‘Bin it in the Bingo Bin’.‘Many South Africans fondly remember a time when anti-litter messaging was a regular presence on national airwaves. In Cape Town, we are bringing this civic pride back as part of our mission to create an anti-littering culture, especially among a new generation of Capetonians. The Bingo TV ad campaign is one way we’re aiming to capture imaginations and rally people behind the idea of taking pride in keeping Cape Town clean. The public can get involved by sharing the campaign message to always bin it in the Bingo bin,’ said Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis.The 30-second commercial begins with two high school learners discovering a piece of litter, with Bingo urging them to bin it. The litter is sportily kicked out of frame, zipping around Cape Town as Bingo chases while different characters help to pass on the litter, from young professionals and kids, to a delivery guy, tik-tokker, a Bo-Kaap aunty, and a City waste removal official. The litter is finally binned in the green City litter bin, with the slogan ‘bin it in the bingo bin’ flashing onscreen.The commercial has already hit the airwaves over these school holidays, appearing on various free-to-air and satellite TV channels, with a robust digital media schedule planned as well.‘We asked the public to help us name our new anti-litter mascot back in 2023, and since then, Bingo has hit the campaign trail with well over 600 school visits, an eco-warriors reading campaign in libraries, and fronting our annual city-wide #SpringCleanCT campaign. City welcomes over 1 300 new employees since July 2024

The City has, from July 2024 to 8 January 2025, inducted a total number of 1 371 new employees.

‘It was heartening to meet the 178 new City employees, and witness the assistance they received to be able to navigate their new roles. Creating jobs and empowering City staff is an important moment. It was fantastic to see so many women joining us,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Corporate Services, Alderman Theresa Uys.As part of City’s comprehensive induction process, clinicians were stationed on-site to provide medical screenings for new employees, as well as guidance on the Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) and other wellness services available to all City staff members.
