Special days and events<h2 class="sectHeading">​​​​​​​​​Community centre programmes for seniors</h2><p>The City has established many recreational hubs across the 24 subcouncils of Cape Town. These weekly recreational programmes and activities focus on fun rather than competitive sport. They are a great place to socialise and meet people with similar interests in your community.</p><div class="notification with-heading white-copy blue bg-navy"><div class="graphic no-border"> <i class="info caring"> <span style="background-color:#324d5b;"> </span><br></i></div><div class="desc"><h4>Did you know?</h4><p> <strong>A caring city: </strong>The <a href="https://www.capetown.gov.za/Family%20and%20home/See-all-city-facilities/Our-recreational-facilities/Community%20centres/Sherwood%20Park%20Recreation%20Centre">Sherwood Park Recreation Centre</a> in Manenberg hosts a Seniors Recreational Men’s Club once a week. These include darts, board games, dominoes, chess and draughts. The games promote healthy living and active ageing. We have designed the event to showcase how enjoyable active ageing can be. More than 4 000 senior citizens attended the third Cape Town Games for Older Persons at the Green Point Athletics Stadium. Seniors enjoyed a range of games and activities, ranging from 25 and 50 metre sprints to duck walks, Jukskei, hula hooping, brisk walks, boules and basketball.<span>   </span></p><h2 class="sectHeading">​​​​​​​​International Day of Older Persons</h2><p>We dedicate 1 October to celebrating seniors as valuable contributors to the world, while stressing your human rights. The City of Cape Town hosts an annual city wide event which celebrates older persons and encourages healthy living and active ageing. The event is hosted in partnership with organisations concerned with older persons, government departments and service providers.</p><h2 class="sectHeading">​​​​​​​​The Healthy Living and Active Ageing programme​​​​​</h2><p>The Healthy Living and Active Ageing programme encourages older persons to live healthy, active lives.
