Parking marshals return to Sea Point, CBD, Newlands, Claremont, BellvilleAs from Tuesday, 2 November 2021, the City will resume charging a tariff for the use of on-street parking bays in Sea Point to ensure a turnover of bays for those visiting the area.<p>As from Tuesday, 2 November 2021, the City will resume charging a tariff for the use of on-street parking bays in Sea Point to ensure a turnover of bays for those visiting the area.</p><p>The parking marshals will receive their training in Sea Point and will be deployed to the Cape Town CBD, Claremont and Newlands before the end of November 2021, in time for the festive season. Marshals will be deployed in Bellville by the end of March 2022, if all goes as planned. </p><p>The applicable parking tariffs are as follows:<br>• Sea Point, CBD, Claremont: R4,80 per 15 minutes<br>• Bellville and Newlands: R3,40 per 15 minutes</p><p>Payment methods:<br>• Cash<br>• Snapscan<br>• Debit card<br>• Credit card</p><p>‘We want to inform motorists ahead of time that they will be charged for on-street parking again, given that the management of parking was temporarily suspended since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic last year. Now that life is slowly returning to normal, we expect to see an increase in economic activity. We anticipate that tourists will return to our beautiful city over the festive season, as will visitors from other parts of the country.</p><p>‘The purpose of charging a tariff for on-street parking bays is to ensure a turnover of bays in popular areas and where people do business. This will benefit business owners because their clients need parking, and those who are looking for parking will also benefit because parking bays will not be hogged for hours on end by the same person,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Transport, Councillor Rob Quintas. </p><p>Motorists are reminded that they need to pay for parking upfront. This is to prevent a situation where motorists return to their vehicles and drive off before paying the marshal. </p><p>The City is in the process of concluding a clamping protocol. Once finalised, repeat offenders who refuse to pay will have the wheels of their vehicles clamped. Fines for parking violations range between R300 and R1 000, depending on the violation.</p><p>‘The parking contracts in itself will provide over 200 jobs which is much needed in these difficult times. Also, the purpose of managing parking is to stimulate economic activity and to provide access to businesses who need to create jobs. This is extremely important, in particular now that the City is gearing for economic recovery in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic. </p><p>‘Over the past few months, we received numerous requests from business owners to implement parking management because their clients struggle to find parking as people who are working in the CBD park in these on-street parking bays for the entire day. I trust the business community will welcome the news, as will those who have been struggling to find parking in these areas,’ said Councillor Quintas.</p><p>Residents who work in the CBD and need longer stay parking are advised to park on the edge of the business district, where parking is either free or cheaper, or in privately operated parking garages.</p><p>The City will implement long-stay parking on the fringes of the Cape Town CBD along the following streets:<br>• Jan Smuts Street<br>• Sir Lowry Road between Tennant and Darling Streets<br>• DF Malan Street<br>• Buitengracht</p><p>The applicable tariffs along these streets will be as follows:<br>• For less than 4,5 hours: R30<br>• Between 4,5 and 9 hours: R50</p><p>‘We want to make it easier for those who need longer stay parking by providing alternatives on the fringes of the Cape Town CBD. From there, motorists can either walk if circumstances allow, or use public transport services such as e-hailing or the MyCiTi bus service that has an extensive footprint within the CBD and surrounds,’ said Councillor Quintas.<br></p>2021-10-20T22:00:00Z1

I went down to the V and A Waterfront earlier this week and the glass court, built in the middle of the shopping centre, looks spectacular and provides onlookers with a remarkable view of the action on the court.</p><p>‘This tournament is just one in a string of events that have taken place in our city over the last four weeks. From Fame Week Africa, Comic Con, to the Cape Town Cycle Tour, the Cape Epic, Miss South Africa and the Cape Town Marathon this past weekend, it is a good indication that the events industry is slowly building its recovery from the pandemic. The land release at a major discount is vital to ensure the viability of social housing projects. This project also potentially makes way for the financing of further affordable housing units on the larger site of this precinct development through the financed-linked individual subsidy (FLISP) – a subsidy for first-time homeowners that is administered by the Western Cape Government, working with the banking sector,’ said the City’s Executive Mayor, Alderman Dan Plato. </p><p><strong>Partnerships help to unlock affordable housing </strong><br>‘About 350 new jobs are being created from local labour during the construction phase, while eight permanent positions will be created post construction. The development is situated close to public transport, schools, places of worship, a library and a police station; is a short walk to Koeberg and Maitland Stations; it is on the MyCiTi bus route and is less than seven kilometres away from the Cape Town central business district. The City’s Social Housing Partnership Programme started in earnest in 2014 and it is great to increasingly see our dream of more affordable, well-located housing come to life. Madulammoho is partnering with Calgro M3 as the turnkey development partner in the development of 204 social housing residential units and a further nine units as part of training facilities on this site. We are hoping to deliver all units by the end of November 2022, if all goes according to plan. Importantly, the date of the tenanting process will open in July 2022 and more communication will follow. Our intention is to look for more social housing opportunities in the years to come, especially with great partners such as the City of Cape Town,’ said Madulammoho Housing Association’s Chief Executive Officer, Renier Erasmus.</p><p><strong>Typical potential tenant profile</strong><br>Preference will be given to people who are registered on the City’s Housing Needs Register and those living in Maitland or to those who live some distance away, but are working in Maitland. This is done to reduce the cost and time of traveling.</p><p>Female-headed households are also a key part of the overall tenanting strategy. Affordability is vital and each tenant is assessed to make sure they have a stable income and can afford the rent for without rental income, these projects cannot succeed. The ability and willingness of tenants to pay rental money is key in social housing developments. </p><p><strong>Cape Town social housing progress at a glance</strong></p><ul><li>There are approximately 2 000 social housing units already in the pipeline for the central Cape Town area. </li><li> Along the Voortrekker Corridor and near important economic nodes, around 2 500 social housing units are nearing completion or are about to commence construction</li><li>There are approximately 6 500 units currently in Cape Town’s overall social housing pipeline and around 50 land parcels city-wide with ongoing investigation into various opportunities</li></ul><p>Facts about social housing:</p><ul><li>It is managed by accredited social housing institutions (SHIs).</li><li> SHIs are solely dependent on rental income. They receive no operational grants. They are able to service their debt finance through rental income.</li><li> As with any rental contract, tenants formally enter into lease agreements. The landlord is the SHI.</li><li> If tenants do not adhere to their lease agreements, the responsible SHI will follow the necessary legal process.
