ENERGY AND CLIMATE CHANGE INTRODUCTORY PRESENTATION: SUB COUNCIL 17
Mr H Essop of Sustainable Energy gave a detailed presentation on the Energy and Climate Change.
Cllr Kleinschmidt thanked the official for a comprehensive presentation and stated that the energy climate change is everyone’s business. He said that the City should promote solar geysers. He said that load shedding damaged a few substations and a full conditions assessment on the substations is needed.
Ald Cavanagh wanted to know what is meant with unplanned services and how does the department communicate maintenance work to the community.
Cllr R Adams wanted to know whether the department has a section that deals with queries and address / educate the community when needed.
In response to the comments and questions by the Cllrs, Mr Essop stated:
· Equipment was not designed for load shedding; so it causes major damage to the high voltage equipment.
· They also had two substations completely stripped due to theft during load shedding in Mitchell’s Plain.
· Vandalism and theft at substations are major problems.
· No street maintenance was done under levels 4 and 3. They are now busy with the back log.
· The planned services are straight forward work that they have identified and put on the priority list to do. Unplanned services are incidents that are unforeseen accidents and call ins.
· They communicate with the residents via the newspaper or pamphleteering with the residents most affected with the maintenance they need to do.
· He said that the department has community liaison officers that the Councillors can communicate with to do outreaches with residents. He said that he would forward the names of the CLO’s to the SC office to distribute to the Cllrs.
