Resolution detail

Sister Khandanisa presented the new appointment system at City Health Clinics.

Let’s start by considering this question:

  • what kind of customer service experiences are associated with government services?
  • What has been your own experience? Most of us have had first hand experience at SARS, Home Affairs, our own vehicle licensing departments.
  • Was there a long queue? Was the waiting time long? Were staff friendly? Was the communication clear?
  • Was there a long queue? Was the waiting time long? Were staff friendly? Was the communication clear?

The New Approach

  • Ensure that mothers and babies are seen as a pair
  • Basic Ante-Natal Care (BANC) and Post Natal care available at all clinics integrated with care for the child as a one stop shop
  • Integrated service instead of the silo approach
  • It is critical that once a women receive a positive pregnancy test, they are immediately booked, tested for HIV, enrolled on ARVs if needed and after delivery they return to the original clinic for the Post-Natal and Child Health services
  • Offering these services together is a cost-effective way to identify and address problems that otherwise might play out negatively in the first thousand days of the life of the child.
  • It prevents double visits to the clinic and saves time, enabling them to be more active in the labour force, improve household income, and invest more in their own, as well as their children’s health, education and well- being, ultimately deriving benefits for all sectors of the economy

Councillors made the following

  • Cllr Moses asked Heideveld and Silver Town clinics not been included
  • Cllr Nqavashe informed the members that Nyanga Clinic is operating with the appointment system and campaign for antenatal ward and breastfeeding space
  • Cllr Truter asked opening times of the clinic. Sister Khandanisa replied 07h30-16h30. Cllr Truter informed members that the elderly people at the Ocean View clinic usually stand outside in the cold and there is no shelter for the patients, the officials do not open on time,
  • Cllr Ngcombolo thanked the staff at Vuyani Clinic, they are operating well discipline and queues. He queried the shortage of staff and said that budget has been allocated for upgrading.
  • Cllr Antonio van der Rheede encouraged the officials to send good news stories and apply for EPWP for managing to streamline the service. He requested that Line department submit a report at the August 2019 Subcouncil meeting highlighting blockages driving budgets and birds eye view of challenges,
