Ms Marcela Guerrero Casas gave an in-depth presentation and stated as follows: Open Street Day, Main Road is scheduled for 1 October 2017. It is not a market, but is a platform for community building, recreation and active mobility. Encouraging people to come along and simply enjoy a car-free street. Open Streets Day has been in Observatory, Langa, Bellville and Mitchell’s Plain. Engagements: • Lots of community sessions every week to discuss concerns in terms of the Open Street day. • Local residents to participate as volunteers. • There will be food vendors to sell food to the street users – the street will not be blocked by structures. • To incorporate a bicycle ride. • Transport for Cape Town will send out a press release. Comments and concerns raised: • Community to use fewer cars to bring them into Town. • Drinking in public – the enforcement thereof • May require an events permit in future • Visible policing, e.g. SAPS, Traffic and Law Enforcement officers • Road closure must be advertised and should be two (2) hours before the start.
