Flagship City Initiatives<span> <h2 class="sectHeading">Walking bus programme</h2> <p>We have teamed up with community members in areas that are affected by crime and gang violence, to help children in their areas travel to and from school safely.</p> <p>The <a href="https://www.capetown.gov.za/City-Connect/Activities-and-programmes/Support-and-safety/walking-bus-programme">Walking Bus Programme</a>, which is active in more than 90 areas, offers safe passage for school children and peace of mind for parents. Volunteers walk with groups of learners to and from school, and where possible, also keep an eye on school perimeters. </p> <h2 class="sectHeading">Indigent benefits</h2></span> <p>We recognise the need to support those people and organisations who are in financial need in our <a href="https://resource.capetown.gov.za/documentcentre/Documents/Bylaws%20and%20policies/Grants-In-Aid%20Policy.pdf" target="_blank">Grants-In-Aid Policy</a>. Individuals and organisations who qualify for rates relief, free services or allocations and housing subsidies can easily make applications to the City of Cape Town through a simple process.</p><p> <a href="https://www.capetown.gov.za/local%20and%20communities/financial-relief-and-rebates/financial-support-services/indigent-benefits">Find out more about Indigent benefits and the application process.</a></p><h2 class="sectHeading">Food security and community food gardens</h2><p>Growing our own food in public or private gardens is a very good way for us all to take more responsibility for how and what we eat. It also helps us create better ‘food security’ – in other words, making sure all Capetonians have enough to eat. Our <a href="https://www.capetown.gov.za/Departments/Social%20Development%20and%20Early%20Childhood%20Development%20Department">Social Development and Early Childood Development Department</a> helps build sustainable communities by supporting community food gardens. </p> <span> <div class="notification with-heading white-copy yellow bg-darker-grey"><div class="graphic"> <i class="info citycard"></i></div><div class="desc"><h4>City Connect</h4><p> <b>Get involved: </b><a href="https://www.capetown.gov.za/City-Connect/Activities-and-programmes/Community-building/Community-food-garden-project">Join the Community Food Garden Project</a>.</p></div></div></span> <p>Find out more about how to <a href="https://www.capetown.gov.za/Local%20and%20communities/Community-building-and-upliftment/Start-a-food-revolution/Start-a-community-food-garden"> start growing food in your community</a> or <a href="https://www.capetown.gov.za/Family%20and%20home/Greener-living/Green-gardening-and-eating/Start-a-food-garden"> in your home</a>.</p><div class="notification with-heading white-copy blue bg-navy"><div class="graphic no-border"> <i class="info caring"></i></div><div class="desc"><h4>Did you know?</h4><p> <b>A Caring City:</b> A number of our Early Childhood Development Centres also have food gardens. <a href="https://www.capetown.gov.za/Family%20and%20home/See-all-City-facilities/Our-service-facilities/ECD%20centres" target="_blank">Find out more about our ECD facilities</a>.</p></div></div><h2 class="sectHeading">Retrofitting of ceilings in RDP houses</h2><p>Our retrofitting ceiling project was introduced by the Executive Mayor to ensure state-subsidised houses, also known as RDP houses, have upgraded, waterproofed ceilings. We have targetted areas in most need and to date, have retrofitted 4500 ceilings. <a href="https://www.capetown.gov.za/media-and-news/City%20getting%20ready%20to%20install%20more%20ceilings%20in%20old%20%27RDP%27%20houses">Find out more about this project and how we plan to rollout the upgrades in the future. </a></p><h2 class="sectHeading">Targeted work opportunities</h2><p>Every year the City of Cape Town creates work for about 40 000 unemployed Capetonians via the EPWP. The Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) was set up by National Government in 2004. EPWP offers short-term and medium-term work opportunities for those who are unemployed or under-skilled. <a href="https://www.capetown.gov.za/Work%20and%20business/Jobs-and-skills-development/Work-for-the-city-of-cape-town/Find-an-opportunity-with-epwp">Find out more about EPWP work opportunities with the City of Cape Town.</a> <br><br>You can also follow the link below for a step-by-step guide on how to apply for work through EPWP in City Connect:</p> <span> <div class="notification with-heading white-copy yellow bg-darker-grey"><div class="graphic"> <i class="info citycard"></i></div><div class="desc"><h4>City Connect</h4><p> <a href="https://www.capetown.gov.za/City-Connect/Find-a-job-or-develop-skills/Apply-for-a-job-with-the-City/Apply-for-work-through-the-EPWP">Apply for work through EPWP</a>.</p></div></div></span>GP0|#e2c907e0-e891-4c40-9c10-02923c41526b;L0|#0e2c907e0-e891-4c40-9c10-02923c41526b|Flagship City initiatives;GTSet|#ef3a64a2-d764-44bc-9d69-3a63d3fadea1;GPP|#3b2fa557-1c67-40ba-b54e-9c7f47e488d5;GPP|#2ad5ede6-473c-4550-a932-aabda12143b1;GPP|#245ec7aa-a528-4cd3-bcac-597c292db711;GP0|#e3fbb1d2-e1e4-419c-8ee4-aeb75c0ec635;L0|#0e3fbb1d2-e1e4-419c-8ee4-aeb75c0ec635|Flagship City initiatives;GPP|#37979909-fcf8-40e7-8391-35fe96beb318;GPP|#d3f3e0bd-5b83-4c1f-845c-7e13f8f4e17d;GPP|#af370586-9ba3-404a-9d6e-02066ca42752;GP0|#700e212a-5dc0-4d8c-9fb6-ef8bf2b40122;L0|#0700e212a-5dc0-4d8c-9fb6-ef8bf2b40122|Flagship City initiatives;GPP|#ad06c7fb-0083-4046-9a2d-e55047830986;GPP|#fdaaa5aa-bac4-497d-b6ea-347f228ec59d;GPP|#e88ff549-973f-4e3c-a46c-cfbe61bd6a24Our city prides itself on programmes and projects that uphold our five value pillars.
