Electric vehiclesElectric vehicles

We are moving towards a future transport system based on zero-emissions and primarily electrically powered vehicles. Electric mobility, or eMobility, uses electrically-powered modes of transport such as electric vehicles (EVs), as a first step in the technology change towards this future transport system. Adoption of EV technology and eMobility are also key focus areas in the City’s climate change response.

What are electric vehicles?

Electric vehicles (EVs) are vehicles that run on electricity stored in a rechargeable battery, unlike traditional vehicles that use petroleum-based fossil fuels, such as petrol and diesel. EVs include passenger cars, minbus taxis, buses and two-wheelers such as e-bikes and e-scooters.

EVs are about six times more efficient than traditional vehicles, resulting in reduced running costs and reduced energy wastage. The shift to EVs can contribute to improved local air quality and a significant reduction in the greenhouse gases produced by the transport sector. Lower maintencance costs also mean financial savings and an overall decreased cost of EVs.

Benefits of EV technology

Electric vehicles:

are cheaper to run with low maintenance requirements;

are more efficient than ICE vehicles;

can help drive economic growth by encouraging the uptake or development of innovation that creates new industries, markets and jobs;

can reduce transport-related greenhouse gas emissions;

have no tailpipe emissions;

means less crude oil needs to be imported; and

will provide cost-effective transport for all.

Why move to EV technology?

We see eMobility as an opportunity to create a healthier, more inclusive city that cares about climate change.

As global manufacturing shifts towards EV production, the market for traditional) vehicles will shrink. This has implications for our local economy as the costs associated with these vehicles will rise and job cuts will affect livelihoods. Therefore, it is important that our industry changes with the times to maintain relevance and protect our local vehicle manufacturing industry along with our primary export markets.

The City has been working on our climate change response for at least a decade. Cape Town, along with cities in South Africa and worldwide, has committed to achieving carbon neutrality and climate resilience by 2050. This forms part of efforts to keep global warming to 1,5˚C, to reduce the impact of climate change, while giving us time to adapt to the new and impending climate reality. A key element in achieving this goal is to clean up our sources of electricity and the electrification of transport.

By embracing this technology, we can plan for and manage the transition appropriately.

What are we doing?

We are driving change in the transport sector through policy innovation that encourages the adoption of EV technology. We are focusing on leading the change by piloting projects to demonstrate the benefits of the technology for further rollouts, as well as engaging with members of the public through communication, education and awareness. We continue to engage with key players in the EV market to unlock barriers to uptake, among others.

We have opened two, free to use solar powered charging stations, one at the Bellville Civic Centre and the other at Somerset West Civic Centre . We are also running pilots with EVs in our fleets, and are working with the Western Cape Government and GreenCape to maximise the opportunities that EV technology bring, including creating new jobs and industries.

Other related platforms where awareness of EVs is being raised include the Cape Town Future Energy Festival and the Energy Water Waste Forum.

The increased uptake of EV provides opportunities and challenges to the electricity grid, as electricity use will increase. It could lead to increased pressure on the infrastructure if bulk charging occurs during peak times. In the future, opportunities will arise to manage the grid by using vehicle-to-grid technology. We are investigating ways to minimise risks while optimising opportunities.

Contact us

Sustainable Energy Markets

Email:
sustainableenergymarkets.enquiries@capetown.gov.za
GP0|#57343293-d609-415f-a4d4-4b2545957f0f;L0|#057343293-d609-415f-a4d4-4b2545957f0f|Electric vehicles;GTSet|#ef3a64a2-d764-44bc-9d69-3a63d3fadea1;GPP|#ccfcad8d-5e79-437a-af31-02efcf3b0983;GPP|#14a3ee0b-b641-42d6-9511-506df3d1bdc9;GPP|#c529c1ac-1f8d-48ae-8079-d34f4dae9c57;GP0|#b4f27251-c6ac-4991-b5d9-b80b6b8f4515;L0|#0b4f27251-c6ac-4991-b5d9-b80b6b8f4515|Electric vehicles;GPP|#6e2b73bc-2edd-49aa-8dae-df7e4d557eba;GPP|#39d66b11-2134-4df5-8360-0bc5e66e8f4f;GPP|#245ec7aa-a528-4cd3-bcac-597c292db711;GP0|#c6070705-56f8-4567-8004-1f042d9cf6c9;L0|#0c6070705-56f8-4567-8004-1f042d9cf6c9|Electric vehicles;GPP|#3ba6194e-49de-4515-8eeb-ec18e7e380e6;GPP|#9f841cad-99c7-419d-a78f-65752fc421d4;GPP|#af370586-9ba3-404a-9d6e-02066ca42752;GP0|#aa9fa623-7978-4d96-b2b6-0d4005553e5e;L0|#0aa9fa623-7978-4d96-b2b6-0d4005553e5e|Electric vehicles;GPP|#fb1e690c-896d-4731-b57e-18210ab7b282;GPP|#6f520d07-fa28-4a39-a1a6-a53c75fe9ed2;GPP|#e88ff549-973f-4e3c-a46c-cfbe61bd6a24;GP0|#d22a2860-7171-4d3f-b343-d359fca1db0d;L0|#0d22a2860-7171-4d3f-b343-d359fca1db0d|Electric vehicles;GPP|#1dd885a2-760b-4834-bc51-2811bb8a83c5;GPP|#d6c1debf-2fe6-4caf-8748-a5126af00c53We are moving towards a future transport system based on zero-emissions and primarily electrically powered vehicles.1
