Metal theft a heavy load to carry

Metal confiscations weighed in at 1 839,41 kilograms, while the amount of confiscated cable clocked 54 kilometres.

'The scary thing is that for all the confiscated items, thousands of kilograms more made it to bucket shops and unscrupulous scrap dealers, and so fuelling a number of illicit trades. The MTU has also recorded a marked increase in complaints attended to, compared to the previous year. Metal theft is on the long list of priorities that we hope to tackle through our cooperation agreement with SAPS and the Western Cape Government. In addition, we will continue to use tools like our CCTV network, Eye in the Sky and infrared technology to tackle metal theft, but also continue to invest in training and inter-agency collaboration,' added Alderman Smith.In August, staff members from the City's enforcement agencies joined the SAPS and National Prosecuting Authority for a joint two-day training intervention on essential infrastructure crime.Residents can report crime and by-law offences anonymously, 24-hours a day, on 0800 110077.

ECD staff brush up on health and hygiene matters

The training initiative was a joint effort between City Health and the Community Arts & Culture Development Department.

The training sessions took place on the 9, 12 and 13 September at the Rocklands and Wynberg Civic Centres, with staff from 150 ECDs benefitting from the Health and Hygiene training. Participants were from ECDs in subcouncils12, 13, 17, 18, 19 and 20.The health and hygiene training covered topics such as the importance of immunisation, managing transmittable diseases such as TB, HIV, measles, polio and meningitis, as well as an explanation of the road to health concept linked to child development. <figure class="subtopic-fullsize-img"><img class="responsive" src="https://resource.capetown.gov.za/cityassets/Media%20Images%202/AAA%20ECD%20training.JPG" alt="" style="width:1066px;" /></figure>Other issues on the training agenda were hygiene protocols around personal care, food preparation and handwashing as well as matters of nutrition.'Adherence to health and safety regulations is critical for any sector, but especially our ECDs where children spend a large part of their day. It is incumbent on us all to know what the expectations are, and to consistently work at meeting and maintaining those expectations. The health of our children, but also the people who care for them at these centres cannot be compromised. City invites residents to join 2024 International Coastal Clean-up

Coastal clean-up initiative at the Helderberg Marine Protected Area along Strand Beach on International Coastal Clean-up (ICC) Day, Saturday 21 September 2024

‘Marine Protected Areas, such as the Helderberg MPA, are especially important no-take zones that aim to conserve coastal biodiversity, such as the near threatened African Black Oystercatcher, so I am very encouraged that we will be focusing our efforts on this stretch of our coastline next Saturday. The ICC is a call on Capetonians to play their part in caring for our beautiful coast and contribute to the world’s largest database on marine debris. Planned water supply maintenance 17 – 18 September

The City’s Water and Sanitation Directorate will be doing planned work in the identified areas.

Zero-pressure tests (ZPT) will be done on the water supply network in the following areas: Tuesday, 17 September 2024, from 09:00 until 17:00: Greater Eerste River area: De Wijnlanden, Penhill, Aan De Wijnlanden, Eerste River, Houghton Place, Eersteriver South, Forest Way. The Water and Sanitation Directorate will upgrade its water supply network by conducting Zero Pressure Testing (ZPT) in the greater Eerste River area, which will result in no water supply to the areas during this time. Zero-pressure testing and step-testing are part of the installation process for zone management infrastructure. Tests are done in advance, to see if any unmapped inflows need to be considered before installing new infrastructure (such as pressure reducing valves for pressure management). Residents are advised to store enough water in advance, as a precautionary measure. Water should ideally be stored in clean, sealed containers. Water tankers will also be stationed at Spar and Eerste River Mall.This work forms part of the City's Water Demand Management Strategy. Managing water pressure more effectively reduces the possibility of pipe bursts and water wastage. The City sincerely regrets any inconvenience. Maintenance work, including pipe and valve installations, repairs and replacements will result in water supply disruption to these areas: Sonnekuil (Poort St, Wessel Lourens, Botterblom, Pioneer, Bainford, Leerdam, Lanzerac, Joli and Drostdy St) The maintenance team will be upgrading the existing AC pipes to high density polyethylene (HDPE) pipes from 09:00 until 17:00 on Wednesday, 18 September 2024. This will ensure the completion and optimal operation of the newly upgraded pipelines. The water supply will be shut off during this period to enable the work to be done safely. Residents are advised to store enough water in advance for domestic use. This work forms part of the Water and Sanitation Directorate's proactive infrastructure maintenance and upgrade programme which ensures the future continuity of water supply by addressing the issue of unaccounted for water. <table cellspacing="0" width="100%" class="ms-rteTable-default"><tbody><tr><td class="ms-rteTable-default" style="width:100%;">What residents need to know about larger-scale planned water supply disruptions:<ol style="list-style-type:decimal;"><li>Careful consideration has been given to the planning of this work to ensure it is being done at a time that is least disruptive to the water supply.</li><li>All sites where water and sanitation repairs and upgrades are conducted are deemed to be construction sites and, as such, are off-limits to members of the public.</li><li>Sometimes the maintenance work can be more complex than anticipated, which means the work could take longer.</li><li>For a short period after the supply has been restored, the water may be discoloured or look milky. This is because of trapped air in the pipes.
