Apply to become a member of a Protected Area Advisory Committee<span> <h2 class="sectHeading">​​​​​​​​​​About​​​​​​​</h2></span> <p>The City has twelve established Protected Area Advisory Committees for twelve nature reserves and protected natural environments around Cape Town. </p><p>Organisations with a real interest in nature reserves can apply to become members of one or more of the committees. All memberships are for a period not exceeding three years. </p><h4> We are revising and renewing Advisory Committee memberships for the following <a href="https://www.capetown.gov.za/Explore%20and%20enjoy/See-all-City-facilities/Our-recreational-facilities/Nature%20reserves">nature reserves</a>:</h4><ul><li>Blaauwberg </li><li>Bracken (including Perdekop and Haasendal) </li><li>Durbanville (including Uitkamp Wetland, Botterblom and Joostenbergskloof) </li><li>Edith Stephens </li><li>False Bay (including Rondevlei, Zeekoevlei, Pelican Park, Slangetjiebos, Zandwolf and Strandfontein Birding Area) </li><li>Helderberg (including Silverboomkloof, Harmony Flats and Morkel’s Cottage) </li><li>Steenbras Nature Reserve </li><li>Table Bay (including Rietvlei, Diep River, Milnerton Racecourse and Zoarvlei) </li><li>Tygerberg (including Bothasig and Arriesfontein) </li><li>Witzands Aquifer (including the Klein Dassenberg Hills) </li><li>Wolfgat </li><li>Zandvlei (including Muizenberg East)</li></ul><p> Protected Area Advisory Committees are established in terms of the <a href="https://www.gov.za/documents/national-environmental-management-protected-areas-act" target="_blank">National Environmental Management: Protected Areas Act, 2003 (Act No. 57 of 2003)<i class="icon link-external"></i></a> and Section 5 of the Constitution of these Advisory Boards. They are constituted in terms of the Regulations for the Proper Administration of Nature Reserves, published under Government Notice R99 in Government Gazette 35021, 8 February 2012.</p><p>The <a href="https://resource.capetown.gov.za/documentcentre/Documents/Procedures%2c%20guidelines%20and%20regulations/PAAC_Constitution.pdf" target="_blank">Constitution for the Establishment of Protected Area Advisory Committees</a> within the City of Cape Town, as adopted by the Portfolio Committee on Energy, Environmental and Spatial Planning on 5 November 2014, determines how these committees operate.</p><h2 class="sectHeading">Committee responsibilities</h2><p>Advisory committees facilitate the interaction, communication, engagement and development of partnerships with stakeholders, as well as the surrounding communities, to promote the objectives of the nature reserves they represent. </p><h4>Committees are expected to:</h4><ul><li>give advice and input on strategies, management plans and reports, as well as monitor progress of implementation,</li><li>promote involvement in decision-making, and </li><li> facilitate connections and integration of nature reserves with the surrounding communities.</li></ul><h4>As a member, you will be expected to: </h4><ul><li>share information with your constituencies, and </li><li>attend quarterly meetings.</li></ul><h2 class="sectHeading">Requirements</h2><h4>Who should apply?</h4><ul><li>academic institutions </li><li> community organisations </li><li> government organisations </li><li>non-governmental organisations </li><li> residents’ associations of neighbouring communities </li><li> user groups </li></ul> <span> <div class="notification with-heading dark-copy pink bg-light-grey"><div class="graphic with-border"> <i class="info note">​​​</i> </div><div class="desc"><h4>Please note</h4><p> If you are already a member of an existing advisory committee or management forum at any of the nature reserves listed above, you will need to re-apply for membership.</p></div></div></span> <p>Your organisation must select a primary delegate to represent them at meetings and act as a contact person.
