Comment on the pre-application basic assessment process for the proposed Vygekraal River upgradeComment on the pre-application basic assessment process for the proposed Vygekraal River upgrade<img alt="" src="https://resource.capetown.gov.za/cityassets/PublishingImages/CityConnectHeader.png" style="BORDER:0px solid;" /><div class="ExternalClass509471B9E6D44725B037A36482E80114"><p>Interested and affected parties are invited to register and comment on the Pre-application Basic Assessment Report for the proposed Vygekraal River upgrade on erven 32604/RE and 32564/RE in Athlone.</p></div><span> <h2 class="sectHeading">About​​​​​​​</h2></span> <p>Notice is hereby given of a public participation process being undertaken in terms of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Regulations of 2014 (Government Notice (GN) No. 326), as amended, enacted under the National Environmental Management Act, 1998 (Act No. 107 of 1998), as amended (NEMA).</p> <span> <div class="mobile-scroll">​​<br> <table style="width:540px;"><thead><tr><th>Applicant</th><th>DEA&DP Ref no:</th><th>DWS MMP GA Ref no:</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td>City of Cape Town: Catchment, Stormwater and River Management Branch</td><td>16/3/3/6/7/1/A7/4/3089/25</td><td>27/2/1/G22/515/1</td></tr></tbody></table></div>​​​</span> <h4>Project description </h4><p>We plan to upgrade the Vygekraal River’s water-carrying capacity and secure its banks in order to create a safe and productive river corridor. </p><h4>The project ia designed to align with the Liveable Urban Waterway initiative and aims to:</h4><ul><li>stabilise the banks and ensure proper water flow to safeguard existing infrastructure; </li><li>reduce flooding;</li><li>support biodiversity; and</li><li>offer ecosystem benefits for local communities.</li></ul><h4>Location </h4><p>The Vygekraal river is located in the Salt River catchment, and we plan to upgrade the section that flows from Jakes Gerwel Drive through the Nantes Park, between Bridgetown, Silvertown and Kewtown, to the N2.
