Comment on the proposed renaming of Ben Friedman Square to Strand Muslim Community Square

<h2 class="sectHeading">About<br></h2><p> The proposed renaming of Ben Friedman Square in Strand aims to honour and recognise the rich heritage of the Strand Muslim community, which celebrated its 200th anniversary in 2023. </p><p> For the past hundred years, the community has had a harmonious relationship with the Friedman family and has been doing business with Friedman and Cohen for generations. </p><p> The square is anchored by three community mosques, which bear testimony to the once vibrant Muslim community in the area. </p><p> During Apartheid, the enactment of the Group Areas Act resulted in the forced removal of the community from the area. In the spirit of reconciliation, it is proposed that the square be renamed to Strand Muslim Community Square. </p><p> We are inviting you to support or object to the proposed renaming. </p><p> In terms of section 17 of the Local Government: Municipal Systems Act, Act 32 of 2000, you may submit comments in respect of the renaming proposal. </p><h2 class="sectHeading">Comment period</h2> <span> <div class="notification with-heading dark-copy pink bg-light-grey"><div class="graphic with-border"> <i class="info note"></i> </div><div class="desc"><h4>Please note</h4><p>The comment period closed on 30 September 2024.
