Comment on the proposed new MyCiTi bus holding facility for Wynberg
About

The proposed new facility will accommodate buses between the morning and evening peak periods when Phase 2A of MyCiTi starts operating.

Phase 2A will connect Khayelitsha and Mitchells Plain with Claremont and Wynberg with direct, quality, safe and affordable public transport.

We plan to have the proposed facility operational by December 2026. It will accommodate 145 MyCiTi buses with a maximum capacity of 200 buses.

The new facility will consist of:

a fenced parking area for the buses

a security kiosk with a signalised entrance to the facility, off Wetton Road

a building to serve as a rest area for drivers during shift changes

toilets

a kitchenette

a small office component

In addition, the plan makes provision for a small depot in 2052, to house a portion of the fleet overnight, with on-site washing, fuelling and maintenance facilities for 60 buses.

The site is located on City-owned land that has limited development potential due to the contamination caused from its previous use as a construction dumpsite.

The buildings will be located on a small portion of land identified as suitable for construction, and the remaining land will be fenced and surfaced for buses.

Construction will not interfere with access to the neighbouring Bonnytoun informal settlement, and careful shaping of the site will ensure that we avoid a small section of degraded wetland adjacent to the M5.

While the site is currently well screened from the M5, additional perimeter landscaping will also help limit the visual impact of the facility.

The concept design also considers future planning needs, including:

an off-ramp from the M5

broader plans to develop the Wynberg Sports Precinct

Notice is hereby given in terms of Section 16(1)(a) of the Municipal Systems Act.

In terms of section 17 of the Local Government: Municipal Systems Act, Act 32 of 2000, you may submit comments, recommendations and other feedback relating to the proposed upgrade.

We will consider all comments before a final design recommendation is made to Council.

Access the Concept Design Plan.

Comment period

Submit your comments and objections from 7 November– 9 December 2022.

Information day

Join us at an information day to find out more and comment on the proposed new bus holding facility.

Date: Thursday, 17 November 2022

Time: 14:00 – 19:00

Venue: Wittebome Civic Centre, Wynberg

Submit your comment

Comments, inputs or recommendations may be submitted via the following channels:

Online
Submit your comments online.

Delivery
Deliver your written comments by hand to:

Subcouncil 20 Office
Alphen Centre
Constantia Main Road
Constantia

Quote the unique reference number MS003/2022.

Please note

Our Public Participation Unit will assist you if you would like to submit comments but have a disability, or are unable to read or write.
