Comment on the proposed development of public open spaces in Mitchells Plain
About

What is Rationalisation?

Rationalisation is a business term used to describe a widespread reorganisation of assets. The process usually involves a review of related strategies, as well as structural changes. Rationalisation is necessary to decrease costs and improve service delivery as well as operational efficiency.

Background

An audit revealed that Mitchells Plain has the highest ratio of public open space available across the City. During the audit process, we identified spaces that have been vacant and undeveloped for years. Some of these spaces are associated with criminal activity, and have been the subject of complaints from the surrounding community.

Proposal

We propose a rationalisation and disposal programme for the public open spaces in Mitchells Plain. Rationalisation of the area will give us an opportunity to transform the public open spaces into meaningful and positive areas for the surrounding community.

Objectives

The rationalisation and disposal programme aims to improve the lives of residents and encourage inward investment in Mitchells Plain.

We will identify properties for release (disposal) and development. A range of developers and investors will have the opportunity to participate in the development process.

Development will include, among other things:

Residential units to meet the housing needs of the community.

New and attractive public open spaces for the community to enjoy.

Provision of space for new community facilities.

Planting of trees to maintain green continuity.

In terms of Section 17 of the Local Government: Municipal Systems Act, Act 32 of 2000, you can submit comments to the municipality in respect of the proposal.

Access the full report.

A copy of the report as well as the maps will also be available at the Subcouncil 12 offices.

Comment period

Comments and objections may be submitted from 27 September – 8 November 2021.

 Open days

We invite you to attend an open day to discuss the proposal and view the plans.

All meetings will take place from 09:00 - 16:00 at the Subcouncil 12 offices - on the following dates:

Saturday, 2 October 2021

Saturday, 9 October 2021

Saturday, 16 October 2021

Saturday, 23 October 2021

Submit your comment

Submit your comments, inputs or recommendations via the following channels:

Online
Submit your comments online.

Delivery
Deliver your written comments by hand to:

 Subcouncil 12 Office
Merrydale Avenue
Lentegeur

Please note

Our Public Participation Unit will assist you if you would like to submit comments but have a disability, or are unable to read or write.
