About

The City faces significant challenges in managing waste due to rapid urbanisation, population growth, and increasing consumption patterns. The Waste Strategy aims to address these challenges through a comprehensive approach that aligns with national and provincial waste management goals.

Our vision for Cape Town is to deliver a clean city for all, where residents and businesses have access to quality, sustainable and affordable waste services.

Key challenges identified in the strategy include:

inadequate infrastructure,

insufficient services in informal settlements,

illegal dumping, and

the need for private sector integration.

In addition, the strategy emphasises the importance of collaborating with residents and the private sector to achieve the City’s ambitious waste diversion targets and create a sustainable urban environment for all Cape Town residents.

We built the strategy on three commitment pillars, which will guide our decision-making processes:

Pillar 1: Optimising existing services

Enhancing efficiencies in current services, while ensuring financial and operational sustainability

Improving human resource capacity, data and technology use, and internal coordination

Pillar 2: Minimising waste to landfill

Creating an enabling environment for private sector integration

Implementing targeted education and awareness campaigns

Increasing accessibility of waste minimisation services and developing additional drop-off sites

Pillar 3: Maximising basket of service offerings

Expanding services through localisation and partnerships with private sector actors and NGOs

Developing tailored service standards

The success of the strategy depends largely on residents and businesses committing to reducing the amount of waste they produce and disposing of waste responsibly.

In terms of section 17 of the Local Government: Municipal Systems Act, Act 32 of 2000, you can submit comments to the municipality in respect of the draft strategy.

Access the documents:

Draft Waste Strategy

FAQs

Summary (English | Afrikaans | isiXhosa)

You can also access the information at:
