Comment on the City’s draft revised Urban Design Policy
About the policy

We first drafted the Urban Design Policy in 2013 with the intention of making our land use management system more policy-driven.

At the time of approval, the position stated was that the policy material (objectives and statements) would be reviewed periodically in order to ensure relevance, and if necessary, make amendments. After more than seven years, an independent review was initiated and recommendations were put forward in order to inform the redrafting of the policy.

Urban Design involves ordering and enhancing the relationship between people, urban space and the environment. Our Urban Design Policy aims to provide guidance to create sustainable useful, attractive, safe, environmentally sustainable, economically successful and socially equitable places.

Good urban design follows local identity and sense of place, cultural responsiveness and purposeful environmental innovation, as well as functioning urban performance.

Once approved, the draft revised Urban Design Policy (2023) will replace the Urban Design Policy (2013).

In terms of Section 21 of the Systems Act, Council is obligated to engage the public on all decisions that may affect them. The public has the right to comment on Council’s policies. Part of the process is to provide the public with the opportunity to make representation and/or give input on the draft revised Urban Design Policy.

In terms of section 17 of the Local Government: Municipal Systems Act, Act 32 of 2000, you can submit comments to the municipality in respect of the draft revised policy.

Access the Draft Urban Design Policy.

You can also access the information at:

City libraries

Subcouncil offices

In the document downloads section below

Comment period

Submit your comments from 19 September – 30 October 2023.

Submit your comment

Online
Submit your comment online.

Delivery
Deliver your written comments by hand to your nearest subcouncil office.

Please note

Our Public Participation Unit will assist you if you would like to submit comments but have a disability or are unable to read or write.
