<h2 class="sectHeading">About the policy</h2></span><p>The <a href="https://resource.capetown.gov.za/documentcentre/Documents/Bylaws%20and%20policies/Fares%20Policy%20for%20Contracted%20Road-based%20Public%20Transport%20-%20%28Policy%20number%2021144K%29%20approved%20on%2029%20May%202015.pdf" target="_blank">Fares Policy for contracted road-based public transport (2015)</a> sets out the primary objectives and principles for structuring and implementing the City’s public transport fares for services under its control. </p><p>
It also supports the City’s vision for transport outlined in its <a href="https://resource.capetown.gov.za/documentcentre/Documents/City%20strategies%2c%20plans%20and%20frameworks/CITP_2023-2028.pdf" target="_blank">2023 -2028 Comprehensive Integrated Transport Plan (CITP)</a>, which is:
</p><p>
<em>All people have efficient access to a range of transport opportunities in a manner that is sustainable and provides dignity.</em> </p><p>
We have reviewed the Fares Policy to investigate the appropriate fares structure for the City in the future. </p><p>
A key outcome of the update to the policy is the consideration of changing from the current distance band-based fares structure to a zonal fares structure for all road-based public transport modes under the City’s control, including the MyCiTi and Dial-a-Ride services.</p><h4>The updates aim to:</h4><ul><li>Simplify the fares system for passengers.
</li><li>Improve access to public transport by increasing the number of loading and payment options, such as credit cards, debit cards, mobile phone payment apps, MyCiTi cards.
</li><li>Create a cheaper, simpler and more flexible fares system to operate, manage and maintain.
</li><li>Improve integration between public transport modes and services.</li></ul><p>The updated Fares Policy will come into effect once approved by Council.</p><p>In terms of section 17 of the Local Government: Municipal Systems Act, Act 32 of 2000, you can submit comments to the municipality in respect of the draft policy.</p><h4>Access the documents:</h4><ul><li><a href="https://resource.capetown.gov.za/documentcentre/Documents/Bylaws%20and%20policies/Draft_Fares_Policy.pdf" target="_blank">Draft Fares Policy for Contracted Road-based Public Transport</a></li><li><a href="https://resource.capetown.gov.za/documentcentre/Documents/Bylaws%20and%20policies/Draft_FaresPolicy-ExecutiveSummary.pdf" target="_blank">Executive Summary</a></li></ul><h4>You can also access the information at:</h4><ul><li><a href="https://www.capetown.gov.za/Explore%20and%20enjoy/See-all-city-facilities/our-service-facilities/Libraries">City libraries</a></li><li><a href="https://www.capetown.gov.za/Family%20and%20home/Meet-the-City/city-council/find-your-councillor-ward-or-subcouncil">Subcouncil offices</a></li><li>In the document downloads section below</li></ul><h2 class="sectHeading">Comment period</h2><p>Submit your comments from <strong>7 March - 7 April 2025</strong>.</p><h2 class="sectHeading">Submit your comment</h2><p>Submit your comments and recommendations via the following channels:
