It is strategically located to unite the existing District Six community on the eastern side of the elevated freeway with the recently returned community on the western side of the freeway.

We want to introduce place making and reference the history of Chapel Street and District Six through the introduction of public art (murals) as part of the planned street upgrade. Mural artwork can depict the true essence of District Six, while encapsulating the community’s vision for their collective future.

Public Art Workshops

Several possible locations for murals have already been identified, and we plan to host a series of story-telling workshops to develop the topics for the artworks.

The workshops will provide attendees with the opportunity to share their stories. We are interested in learning about past and present memories and experiences of District Six, as well as aspirations for its future that artists can use to inform the artworks.

We will then group the various stories into topics or subjects with the help of our Art Facilitator.

Possible themes identified to date include:

Culture

Music

Displacement

Sense of community

Consequences of injustice

Life in the streets of District Six

Future aspirations for District Six

Sessions will take place between March and August 2025 at various venues, which we will confirm based on the survey responses.

Please note

Participation in the workshops is voluntary.

Notice is hereby given in terms of section 78(3) of the Local Government: Municipal Systems Act, No. 32 of 2000 that the City of Cape Town Metropolitan Municipality (“the City”) intends to explore the provision of the municipal service through an external mechanism.

Notice is further given in accordance with section 17 of the Local Government: Municipal Systems Act, Act 32 of 2000, the public and interested parties or groups are given the opportunity to submit comments, recommendations or input to the municipality in respect of the dates and venues for the art workshops.

Register your interest

You can register your interest via one of the following channels:

Online
Register your interest online.

Email
Register your interest via email to D6ChapelStreet.Upgrade@capetown.gov.za.

In-person
Register your interest at your nearest Subcouncil office.

Please note

Our Public Participation Unit will assist you if you would like to register but have a disability or are unable to read or write.
