Volunteer as a reservist firefighter<h2 class="sectHeading">Become a reservist firefighter</h2><p>The Chief Fire Officer will station volunteers at any of the City’s 30 <a href="">fire stations</a>, taking into account the need to report to the station within a reasonable amount of time. There are four different categories of reservists to carry out a range of functions. </p><p>These categories are: </p><ul><li>responding to alarms and assisting in the suppression of fire including rescue, entry, ventilating, and salvage work;</li><li>performing clean-up and overhaul after an emergency;</li><li>making checks and doing maintenance to ready equipment for service; and</li><li>responding to medical incidents, amongst a range of various functions.</li></ul><h2 class="sectHeading">​​​​​​​​​​Requirements</h2><p>To qualify, you must be a South African citizen, a resident within the City of Cape Town jurisdiction, between the age of 16 and 60, and without a criminal record. For detailed information on requirements, you can contact the <a href="">Fire and Rescue Service Department</a>. <br><br>Members will be expected to work a minimum of 160 hours per year. No reservist will be permitted to work more than 40 hours in any seven-day week.
