Apply for a prepaid electricity meterApply for a prepaid electricity meter<img alt="" src="https://resource.capetown.gov.za/cityassets/PublishingImages/City%20Connect%20Header%20Image.jpg" style="BORDER:0px solid;" /><div class="ExternalClass55D8AC91D79C41E3AEF34F9A7B92DEBE"><p>​Both the City of Cape Town and Eskom are licensed to supply electricity in the Cape Town municipal area. If you are in a City-supplied area, you can apply for a prepaid electricity meter by following the process below.</p></div><span> <h2 class="sectHeading">How to apply</h2> <span> <div class="notification with-heading dark-copy pink bg-light-grey"><div class="graphic with-border"> <i class="info note">​​​</i> </div><div class="desc"><h4>Prepaid meters must be updated</h4><p> The current electricity metering software for all prepaid meters in South Africa is due to expire in 2024. We will be rolling-out the meter updates in phases according to <a href="https://www.capetown.gov.za/general/prepaid-electricity-meter-update-project" target="_blank">a schedule</a>.</p></div></div></span> </span> <div><p>As a residential customer, you can either apply for the lifeline or domestic tariff — view the City’s Consumptive Tariffs in the document downloads section below for more information. As a business customer, you can apply for a tariff based on your expected monthly consumption.</p><p>Because residents and businesses follow the same process when applying for a prepaid electricity meter, please be sure to indicate which category you are applying for in your application.</p> <span> <div class="notification with-heading dark-copy pink bg-light-grey"> <div class="graphic with-border"> <i class="info toptip">​​​</i> </div><div class="desc"><h4>Top tip</h4><p> <b></b>Please fill in the application form in the document downloads section below using black ink only. Use clear capital letters and tick all applicable checkboxes.</p></div></div></span> <p> <strong>​​Step 1:</strong> Before you start your application, you must hire an electrical contractor to assess your property's cabling and infrastructure, and to perform the meter installation. Their details will need to be submitted along with your application.</p><p> <strong>​​Step 2:</strong> Download and complete the New or Modified Electricity Supply Application​​ Form from the document downloads section below. </p><p> <strong>​​Step 3:</strong> Along with the form, you will also need to provide supporting documentation.<br></p></div> <span> <div class="lrg-icon-content bordered"><div class="lrg-icon lrg-check"><p> <b>Submit the following documents along with your application form:</b></p><ul><li>a copy of the rates account for the property</li><li>the property owner’s ID or a certified copy of their ID</li><li>if applicable, a letter of proxy from the company’s board of directors that grants permission for the applicant to act on their behalf along with certified identification of this person</li><li>other documents as requested</li></ul></div>​ </div> <p>​<strong>Step 4:</strong> Once you have completed the form and gathered your supporting documentation, you can submit it at any of the Customer Support Offices listed at the top of the application form.</p> <div><p> <strong>​​Step 5:</strong> If you are requesting a standard electricity connection as a residential user, you will have to pay for the cost of connecting your property to the shared network. You may also have to contribute to the cost of the shared network based on how much electricity you require.</p><p>Non-standard electricity connections are quotable, but only after you have paid for the required capacity of electricity that your property is going to use. You may also have to pay a quotation fee before a quote is provided. You can find these costs in the Electricity Services Schedule of Miscellaneous Tariffs in the document downloads section below.</p><p> <strong>​​Step 6:</strong> Once you have submitted your application, we are mandated to get back to you with a quote within ten working days if there is existing infrastructure and within a month if the network must be extended.</p><p> <strong>​​Step 7:</strong> When the City contacts you to arrange for installation, you must specify that you will require a prepaid electricity meter.
