How to register and licence a new vehicle

Registering your new vehicle for licensing is an easy process as long as you have all the right documents.

You will need

  • a manufacturer’s certificate with all vehicle details;
  • proof of purchase;
  • proof of address;
  • a copy of acceptable identification;
  • the registration and licence fee; and
  • valid roadworthy status for your vehicle (if you don't have a valid roadworthy status, the licence disc will not print).

Step 1: Get all your documents in order and make sure that they are all “appropriate” – which means can be accepted by the City.

For example, appropriate proof of address would have to come from a utility bill or any other official account documentary. Acceptable identification needs to be a South African ID or passport or driver’s licence.

Step 2: Download and complete the Registration and Licensing of Motor Vehicle Application Form at the bottom of the page.

Step 3: Gather all your documents and take to your nearest motor vehicle registration office to submit and complete your new vehicle registration.

Step 4: Once you have paid the registration and licence fee you will receive your vehicle licence disc, registration number and your registration papers.

Step 5: Store the papers in a safe place; cut out the disc and stick in on the inside of your car. If you don't display it, you could be fined.
