If you would like to apply for a special or temporary vehicle permit, you can follow the process below.
How to apply for a special permit
A special vehicle permit allows you to drive an unlicensed vehicle on a public road for a specific purpose, for example: repairs, police clearance and roadworthy tests. Special permits are valid for three days from issue and no passengers are alllowed in the vehicle while it is on the road.
Step 1: Download and complete the Special or Temporary Permit Application Form, which you will find in the document downloads below.
You will also need to provide:
- acceptable identification of the applicant
- vehicle licence number, registration number or VIN or chassis number
Step 2: Hand in your completed application at your local motor vehicle registration office and pay the required fee.
How to apply for a temporary permit
A temporary vehicle permit allows you to drive an unlicensed vehicle on a public road for a specific purpose. Temporary permits are valid for 21 days from issue and passengers are allowed in the vehicle.
Step 1: Download and complete the Special or Temporary Permit Application Form, which you will find in the document downloads below.
You will also need to provide:
- acceptable identification of the applicant
- vehicle licence number, registration number or VIN or chassis number
- valid roadworthy status (a roadworthy test that was passed is only valid for 60 days)
Step 2: Hand in your completed application at your local motor vehicle registration office and pay the required fee.
