Apply for the burial or cremation of destitute persons
If you don't have the means to pay for the burial or cremation of a deceased friend or relative, you may apply for a burial or cremation of destitute persons with the City.
Burial or cremation of destitute persons criteria
A deceased person may qualify for a destitute person’s burial or cremation if:
- they did not have an income greater than the state old pension or state disability pension;
- there is no insurance policy or estate to pay for the burial;
- no kin with legal duty to support the burial is present
- kin do not have sufficient funds; or
- no other person, religious organisation or NGO has offered to pay for the burial.
How to apply
Step 1: To apply, you will need to obtain an application form. You can obtain a form from any councillor or subcouncil manager, or you can download it here.
Step 2: Complete the form and submit it at your nearest cemetery booking office, along with a sworn affidavit that the information contained in the application is true.
Step 3: Once your application has been received, you will be invited to an interview with a subcouncil manager and a City Recreation and Parks official. This will be the grounds for a recommendation on the outcome of your application.
Step 4: Once the application has been approved, preparations for burial can begin. If your application was not successful, you will be notified accordingly.
