Apply for temporary development boards
We control
outdoor advertising and signage in Cape Town. If you want to display a temporary property marketing sign, a construction site sign or project board larger than 3 m², you can follow the process below to apply for permission.
Applications
Applications for temporary display boards will be supported if the smaller standard board is not easily visible to prospective clients; if the premises is located too high or too far away from prospective clients; or if the topography prevents the display of the smaller, standard board. You can apply for temporary large property marketing, auctioneering and development boards.
How to apply
Step 1: You can apply for and submit your application, with all associated documents, at any of our district offices (see below)
Please bring the following with you:
- a site plan, drawn to scale, and clearly showing the proposed position of the sign;
- if attached to a building, a drawing that is sufficiently detailed to give a clear representation of what the sign will look like, on a scale no smaller than 1:20; and
- details and photos of any other signs currently being displayed or proposed to be displayed on the site.

You will need to pay an application fee, calculated in terms of the City’s approved charges and tariffs. Please consult our Environmental and Heritage Management tariffs at the bottom of the page for the required fee.
Please note
Your application will not pass pre-scrutiny and will be returned to you if the information provided is incorrect. Please ensure you are thorough and correct.
Step 3: Once payments have been made and all requirements have been met, the City will either approve the application or conduct a site inspection and inform you of the result within 48 hours
Payment
We accept the following methods of payment:

Cash, debit and/or credit card: We will cover the bank cost on a cash, debit and/or credit card payment on an amount above R7000 per transaction. We absorb such costs in respect of single payments of R7000 and below.

Direct deposit at any Nedbank Branch: Insert your payment reference number on your deposit slip

Electronic payments (EFT): Select the City of Cape Town as a bank listed beneficiary on your bank's website. Use your 9 - digit reference number in the beneficiary account number/ payment reference field.
