Apply for outdoor advertising and signage (General, first and third party signs)

Our Environmental Management Department control outdoor advertising and signage in Cape Town. If you want to display a new sign, alter or add to an existing approved sign or submit a signage plan, you can follow the process below to apply.

How to apply

You will need to submit a General, first and third party application if you are considering erecting any of the following:

  • Third-party billboard
  • Flat, projected and projecting signs
  • Locality-bound freestanding and composite first-party sign
  • Locality-bound farm sign
  • Service station sign
  • Sky sign
  • Roof sign
  • Verandah, balcony, canopy, supporting columns, pillars and posts
  • Boundary wall, fence and construction site signs
  • Aerial sign
  • Transit sign
 

Please note

Please ensure your information is thorough and correct. If the information provided on the form is incorrect, your application will be returned to you, which may cause delays.

Step 1: Download and complete the General First and Third Party Application form in the document download section below.

You will need to provide the following documents with your application:

  • a drawing that is sufficiently detailed to give a clear representation of what the sign will look like, materials used for construction and fixing, on a scale no smaller than 1:20
  • a graphic representation of the proposed sign if it is to be mounted on a wall or against a building, done to scale
  • a site plan, drawn to scale and clearly showing a diagram of the building, boundary lines, building lines balcony or canopy lines (where applicable), the position of the sign in relation to the boundaries of the site, traffic lights and/or traffic signals (where they exist in front or behind signs, especially for properties situated at intersections)
  • please show all directional or traffic signs in the vicinity and indicate spacing distances from proposed sign/s
  • written permission from the owner of the property, unless the property is yours
  • written permission from adjacent property owners for signs encroaching over adjacent private property

Step 2: Submit your completed application form together with two copies of your plans to one of the district offices listed in the table below:

You will be required to pay a fee calculated in terms of the City’s approved tariffs and charges. Please consult our Environmental and Heritage Management tariffs which you can find in the document downloads section below for the required fee.

Please note

Should the City require any changes to your application, you will be notified within 21 days.

Payment

We accept the following methods of payment:

  • Cash, debit and/or credit card: We will cover the bank cost on a cash, debit and/or credit card payment on an amount above R7000 per transaction. We absorb such costs in respect of single payments of R7000 and below.
  • Direct deposit at any Nedbank Branch: Insert your payment reference number on your deposit slip
  • Electronic payments (EFT): Select the City of Cape Town as a bank listed beneficiary on your bank's website. Use your 9 - digit reference number in the beneficiary account number/ payment reference field.
