Get involved in the Dassenberg Coastal Catchment Partnership

The Dassenberg Coastal Catchment Partnership (DCCP) is a landscape conservation initiative that works to conserve the large, high quality biodiversity area between CapeNature's Riverlands Nature Reserve and the coast.

Why partner

The area of focus stretches from Dassenberg Hills in the east to Silwerstroomstrand in the west and includes the Witzands dune system. This conservation area is an important climate change adaptation corridor and is highlighted on the Biodiversity Network map which illustrates a fine-scale conservation plan for the area. We have partnered with a number of organisations who work with us on the DCCP.

Advantages of the programme

  • Clearing of alien vegetation alone creates 450 000 days worth of work for the first three years
  • Great potential to increase and unlock recreational and tourism opportunities close to Cape Town
  • Infrastructure covers a large area of the Witzands Aquifier protection zone
  • Conserving unique natural and cultural heritage

Intended outcomes of the project

  • To protect important ecological infrastructure (e.g. the Witzands Aquifer which supplies 40% of Atlantis’ water)
  • Jobs and skills development for the communities of Atlantis, Mamre, Pella Chatsworth, and Riverlands
  • To protect the area as a corridor for climate change resilience and adaptation
  • To protect the natural and cultural heritage of the area.
