Submit a research request
Researchers wishing to access City resources must apply for research permission via the process described below.
How to submit a research request
To facilitate this process, we follow a standard research application procedure for all requests, including requests from independent researchers and organisations.
Due to the volume of requests, research requests should be submitted
at least one month ahead of the planned research commencement date. Please bear in mind that requests requiring the participation of multiple departments will take longer to review and process for approval.
For your research request to be considered, you must submit details of the research to be undertaken, along with supporting documentation.
Requirements for submitting your research request:
- Provide us with an approved research proposal or outline of the planned research.
- An ethics approval letter from your academic institution, if applicable.
- Details of the researcher(s) and (their) institutional affiliation(s).
- Full details of the planned research products and how the research and information will be used.
- Full details of what specifically is being requested from the City for the research, including data, documents and details of participants to the research.
- Full details of the time required from City staff who are requested to be participants in the research.
- The commencement date and duration of the research.
- Details of any planned publication of the research findings (name of publication and anticipated publication date).
- Any additional information related to the research proposal as may be requested by the City of Cape Town
Submit your research request online.
Accompanying documentation must be uploaded with the application form.
Additional required documents need to be sent to
researchrequest@capetown.gov.za.
See our detailed
guideline document for comprehensive research request requirements.
The guidelines apply to:
- researchers in the private sector, in government-associated research institutions and/or portfolios, and in non-governmental organisations (NGOs) .
- researchers undertaking non-degree related research (including those at academic institutions and City of Cape Town staff)
- students or researchers (including City of Cape Town staff) wishing to undertake research towards the completion of a degree or academic qualification.
