City to support Minstrel and Cape Malay Choir events for next three years City to support Minstrel and Cape Malay Choir events for next three years <img alt="" src="https://resource.capetown.gov.za/cityassets/PublishingImages/Cape%20Town%20Events%20Header.jpg" style="BORDER:0px solid;" /><p>​<strong><em><span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:"century gothic", sans-serif;">Today Council approved that the Events Department enter into new multi-year agreements to sponsor the 2de Nuwe Jaar Minstrel Parade and the Malay Choirs Road March for the next three years.<span style="background:white;"></span></span></em></strong><br></p><p>​</p><p>Pending finalisation of the negotiations and the contracts, the Council decision means the City of Cape Town will provide funding and other support to the events for the 2022/23, 2023/24 and 2024/25 financial years.  </p><p> </p><p>All agreements will be subject to the organisation complying with all the criteria set out by the City.</p><p> </p><p>The funding will be disbursed to the Kaapse Klopse Karnival Association and the Cape Malay Choir Board, who are responsible for organising the respective events.  </p><p> </p><p>The sponsorship agreement with the Cape Malay Choir Board will start on 31 December when the Malay Choirs Road March returns after a two-year break due to Covid-19.  </p><p> </p><p>The popular 2de Nuwe Jaar Minstrel Parade will also make its return this summer on its traditional 2 January date.        </p><p> </p><p>'These multi-year agreements are an illustration of the City's commitment to the importance of these cultural events to Cape Town. These events are an institution for thousands of Capetonians whose heritage is steeped in these century-long traditions. By supporting these events for multiple years, the City wants to play its role in ensuring the stability and sustainability of these events into the future.
