<p>The Access to Information Unit will be assisting attendees with any queries they may have. </p><p><strong>The details are as follows:</strong></p><ul><li><strong>Date:</strong> Wednesday, 25 February 2026</li><li><strong>Time:</strong> From 08:30 to 14:30, visitors are welcome to visit at any time during this slot</li><li><strong>Venue: </strong>Cape Town Civic Centre, concourse level, 12 Hertzog Boulevard</li></ul><p>The City’s Access to Information Unit has a dedicated walk-in public office, namely the Access to City Records Office in the Cape Town Civic Centre where the unit assists the public with the PAIA process. This includes guidance on completing and submitting PAIA forms, liaising with the relevant City line departments for the provision of records, as well as decisions on outcomes of PAIA applications. </p><p>An online service to submit requests, and more information is also available on the <a href="https://www.capetown.gov.za/City-Connect/Access-information/Request-access-to-information">City’s website</a>. </p><p>The campaign intends to raise awareness of the Promotion of Access to Information Act 2 of 2000 and to inform members of the public of their rights in terms of the Act.</p><p>This initiative forms part of the City’s efforts to engage residents about the PAIA process and to create awareness that any person can apply to the City for access to information.</p><p>PAIA gives effect to Section 32 of the Constitution, which confirms the public’s right of access to information held by the State, with the exception of records held by the Cabinet, Courts and by members of Parliament and Provincial Legislatures. Therefore, the information in the City’s possession is subject to PAIA. </p><p>The act provides voluntary and mandatory mechanisms or procedures to enable people to obtain information swiftly, for free, and effortlessly.</p>

Licence to drive turns out to be fake

Metro Police officers arrested a motorist in Parow last week

<span><p>Officers were on patrol in Parow on Thursday, 12 February at 09:30, when they noticed a driver acting suspiciously and trying to avoid looking at them.</p><p>The officers performed a traffic stop and found the ride-hailing driver's licence to be fraudulent. While searching the vehicle, they found a device which could be used to produce fraudulent licences.</p><p>The driver was arrested for the production of fraudulent documents and was detained at Parow SAPS for further investigation.</p><p>‘This is another example of public transport drivers putting the lives of their passengers, other road users and their own at risk. Not only is it a criminal offense to drive without a licence, and is it a safety risk, but it indicates a lack of proven competence. <br></p> <figure class="subtopic-fullsize-img"> <img class="responsive" src="https://resource.capetown.gov.za/cityassets/Media%20Images%202/fraudulent%20licence.jpg" alt="" style="width:1072px;" /> </figure></span><p>‘Over the last few weeks, our officers have arrested a number of public transport drivers from those driving drunk, to unlicenced drivers and those guilty of extreme overloading. Reliable public transport is essential for the city’s economic development, and while there are many challenges, incompetent, unfit and unlicenced drivers should not be one of those challenges. Our officers will continue to patrol, check and arrest drivers who put the lives of hundreds at risk,’ said Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.</p><p>This week Metro Police officers made 114 arrests, of which 21 were for driving under the influence, while their Law Enforcement counterparts made 183 arrests and issued 11 286 notices. </p><p>Traffic Officers recorded 68 arrests, of which 58 were for driving under the influence of alcohol, eight for reckless/negligent driving and two for other offences. They also recorded 28 865 offences, impounded 170 public transport vehicles and executed 928 warrants of arrest. <br> <br>The Public Emergency Communication Centre recorded 1 277 calls for assistance this past weekend. Of the calls received, 446 were for medical assistance, 57 were assault related cases, 35 domestic violence reports and 37 pedestrian and motor vehicle accidents.</p><p>The public is reminded to report emergencies or any suspicious and/or criminal activities by phoning the City’s Public Emergency Communication Centre on 021 480 7700. </p><p>It’s important that the caller provide detailed information, such as the time, exact address and a short description. Additional R39 million for stormwater maintenance to mitigate winter flooding

The City’s Urban Mobility Directorate has been allocated an additional R39 million to ramp up maintenance and repair of stormwater infrastructure in flood-prone areas

<p>The City Council committed an additional R39 million to the City’s Roads Infrastructure Management Department (RIM) when it approved the adjustment budget at its meeting last month. </p><p>‘Thanks to the additional budget, we are increasing our maintenance efforts, focusing on those areas that are worst affected during the wet winter months. We can deploy more teams and increase the cleaning cycles. Unfortunately, we have seen a significant increase over the past few years in vandalism and the illegal dumping of refuse and litter into our stormwater infrastructure. This remains our single biggest challenge because the dumping of material causes blockages and prevents runoff from rainfall events to enter the system and as a result, roads and houses get flooded, or the runoff takes an unusually long time to clear. </p><p>‘We have eight districts across Cape Town and the RIM teams in these areas are already hard at work, clearing stormwater pipes, manholes, catchpits, channels, ponds, and canals, as well as infrastructure along major traffic routes and in low lying areas. This is in addition to maintenance and minor repairs that are needed to ensure the system is fully functional by winter,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.</p><p>The areas for focused interventions were identified using data from last year, public reports of flooding, historic records, and site visits and investigations by local RIM teams. Stormwater systems in and around informal areas are included.</p><p>High risk areas include the following:</p><ul><li><div style="text-align:left;">Flat areas where run-off from rainfall events is likely to build up</div></li><li><div style="text-align:left;">Low lying areas with no overland stormwater infrastructure</div></li><li><div style="text-align:left;">Where properties are lower than the roads</div></li><li><div style="text-align:left;">Areas prone to illegal dumping and vandalism</div></li><li><div style="text-align:left;">Where pond inlet and outlet structures are blocked off</div></li><li><div style="text-align:left;">Areas below steep mountain slopes</div></li><li><div style="text-align:left;">Low lying coastal areas </div></li><li><div style="text-align:left;">Major traffic routes</div></li></ul><p>The additional R39 million forms part of the directorate’s operational budget for the period up to 30 June 2026 for:</p><ul><li><div style="text-align:left;">Mechanical jetting and vacuuming to remove waste from underground pipes and catchpit connections</div></li><li><div style="text-align:left;">Desilting of canals and ponds </div></li><li><div style="text-align:left;">Repair of low-flow channels</div></li><li><div style="text-align:left;">Repair of damaged and vandalised manholes and catchpits to improve the functionality of the system</div></li><li><div style="text-align:left;">Minor modifications to existing stormwater infrastructure</div></li></ul><p>‘The efforts will assist us to mitigate flooding incidents, and the teams will also increase inspections to proactively identify blocked infrastructure. On this note, I want to ask residents to keep on reporting blocked drains and illegal dumping, to not sweep waste into stormwater drains, and to help keep the stormwater inlets in their streets free from debris and waste.
