Frail care facilities

Consider frail care when even simple daily activities such as eating, personal hygiene and moving about without assistance, become difficult. The carers at a frail care facility may not be medically trained, but they are skilled in caring for older persons and are supervised by a nursing sister.

Assisted living

An assisted living facility consists of housing for the elderly that may provide nursing care, housekeeping, meal preparation and other services.

Senior citizen complexes

A senior citizen complex consists of safe, comfortable housing for the elderly. The City manages 12 complexes, with a total of 529 self-catering units for citizens over the age of 60.

As these are self-catering units, tenants have to be able-bodied and not in need of frail care. Each complex is supervised by an Area Manager who takes care of building maintenance as and when required by tenants, with the City providing all other essential services.

Independent living facilities

Older people who are still independent, but prefer to stay with other seniors (overseen by a carer) often enjoy staying in an independent living facility. If you are an older person who enjoys the company of others, or the carer of an older person who likes to socialise, this may be a suitable option.

Abuse of the elderly

Abuse is more likely to occur when a person is:

• physically dependent on an abuser;
• lacks enough income to be self-sufficient; and
• has a failing memory or is easily confused.
