Apply for exemption from private isolation valves and sub-metering
Owners of properties with multiple residential, commercial or industrial units are
required to install private isolation valves and meters for each unit. This ensures that water is used efficiently and prevents wastage. In exceptional cases, where this is not possible due to the plumbing layout of your property, an exemption from these requirements may be granted.
About
An exemption from these requirements will only be granted if:
- you are able to provide sufficient motivation for the exemption; and
- your application is verified and assessed by a CCT water inspector.
Individual water metering is necessary because it helps us manage our precious water resources and is also beneficial to you.
Water metering:
- encourages efficient water use,
- enables the detection of water leaks,
- promotes fair water use – if you use water wisely, you don’t have to pay for the habits of more wasteful water users, and
- is a pre-condition for the provision of free basic water.
How to apply
Step 1: Download and complete the
Exemption - private isolation valves and sub-metering application form.
Step 2: You will need to submit the following supporting documents with your application:
- A detailed technical report from a registered plumber describing the existing plumbing layout as well as work required in order to
comply with the By-law.
- Minutes of the Body Corporate/Home Owners Association meeting indicating support for this application
Step 3: Email the completed application form and all attachments to
water@capetown.gov.za
Step 4: A City water inspector will conduct an inspection of your property. Make sure that a representative is available on the appointed date to ensure:
- access to service ducts,
- access to hot water cylinders, and
- access to a minimum of three units
Step 5: Once your application has been reviewed and the inspection has been conducted, we will contact you in writing to advise you of the decision.
