Rondebosch East Common Conservation Area
About
The Rondebosch East Common Conservation Area is approximately 5 hectares in extent and consists of critically endangered Cape Flats Sand fynbos. This site falls within the City of Cape Town’s biodiversity network and allows local species to fulfil their life cycles between conservation areas to ensure the survival of local biodiversity. The conservation area becomes a seasonal wetland during the rainy season and supports a variety of wetland flora and fauna species, creating a picturesque display for visitors. The conservation area is undergoing habitat restoration and some interesting species have re-emerged including the critically endangered Hessea cinnamomea, the critically endangered Elegia recta and the harmless Lamprophis aurora (Araura housesnake). This site presents an opportunity for local species that have disappeared from some habitats to be reintroduced into the conservation area thereby strengthening the biodiversity of the area.
