CCTV installations are right on track

The Metro Police Strategic Surveillance Unit (SSU) is responsible for the management of the CCTV network, including its expansion.

The Metro Police Strategic Surveillance Unit (SSU) is responsible for the management of the CCTV network, including its expansion. Cape Town’s network has grown to more than 1 200 cameras across the metropole, focusing on high crime areas, public spaces and critical infrastructure. Installations, upgrades and maintenance are funded by the Safety and Security Directorate, and augmented by the vital ward allocation funding for their projects. <figure class="subtopic-fullsize-img"><img class="responsive" src="https://resource.capetown.gov.za/cityassets/Media%20Images%202/CCTV%201.jpg" alt="" /> </figure> In this financial year, areas where installations are taking place include Langa, Beacon Valley, Brown's Farm, Macassar, Morningstar, Durbanville, Electric City and Malibu Village. ‘I’m incredibly proud of the work being done in this space to expand our CCTV footprint. It speaks to a commitment to public safety, but also sound financial management. Apart from our efforts to grow Cape Town’s CCTV footprint, we are also retrofitting and upgrading existing infrastructure to make sure that our cameras are on par with current technology. Cape Town’s CCTV journey has been going for more than 25 years and it remains one of the best force multipliers for both enforcement and emergency services,’ said Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith. In the next financial year, work will get under way on a long term CCTV infrastructure project for areas with no fibre network. <figure class="subtopic-fullsize-img"><img class="responsive" src="https://resource.capetown.gov.za/cityassets/Media%20Images%202/CCTV%202.png" alt="" /> </figure> This includes the area between Khayelitsha and Sir Lowry’s Pass Village, the deep south and parts of the southern suburbs between Wetton and Rondebosch.During the month of January 2026, the CCTV network detected 3 078 incidents including by-law transgressions, fires, traffic-related incidents and suspected acts of crime. There were also 52 arrests that came courtesy of CCTV detections, and the South African Police Service sought CCTV assistance in 42 cases – of which just more than half were positive. Nyanga accounted for just more than a quarter of all the requests.‘I am very happy that SAPS is starting to exploit this and other City resources that are geared to enhance public safety. It has taken a long time to get to this point, and while I’m sure that there is still considerable room for improvement, it is definitely something worth applauding,’ added Alderman Smith. End

Goodwood Library celebrates 65 years

The City of Cape Town’s Goodwood Library celebrated its 65th birthday this week.

The Goodwood Library was built after the old Goodwood Hall was demolished and opened its doors on 10 March 1961. Registered voters as well as business owners could become members at a cost of £1 per year. <figure class="subtopic-fullsize-img"> <img class="responsive" src="https://resource.capetown.gov.za/cityassets/Media%20Images%202/CoCT%20Goodwood%20public%20library%2065th%20birthday%20PHOTO%201.jpg" alt="" style="width:948px;" /> </figure>On one side of the building, the roof consisted of a domed skylight and beneath it was a garden. In the late 80’s the garden was removed and the children’s section was created in this space. In 1994 the library started issuing books on a computer system, and also in the 1990’s, Goodwood Library established a branch library in Edgemead.‘Congratulations to the Goodwood Library on 65 years of serving the community. For decades, this library has been a place where residents can learn, explore new ideas and develop a lifelong love of reading. Like all of our libraries, Goodwood is a magical space where stories, knowledge and community can come together. City visits Macassar to assess streetlight vandalism and interventions

Macassar forms part of the City of Cape Town’s streetlight infrastructure maintenance and upgrading programme aimed at ensuring that infrastructure is repaired, maintained and upgraded where necessary.

My visit to Macassar forms part of our focused efforts to oversee public infrastructure maintenance, ensuring all communities remain well lit. In addition, we are closely monitoring our City-wide streetlight burn rate, which currently sits at 87,7% according to our most recent data, just shy of our 90% target <figure class="subtopic-fullsize-img"> <img class="responsive" src="https://resource.capetown.gov.za/cityassets/Media%20Images%202/DSC_7868.jpg" alt="" style="width:978px;" /></figure>Theft, vandalism and illegal connections remain the City’s most significant challenge. Although Macassar falls within an Eskom supply area, limiting the City’s Blue Downs Depot to only public lighting service requests, vandalism in this district alone has already cost the City more than R1,9 million from over 2810 logged public service requests, crucial funds that could otherwise have supported critical energy infrastructure needed to drive Cape Town’s economy.‘During our visit to the area, we saw instances of extreme vandalism where concrete streetlight poles were chopped in half for their cables. Macassar is one of the areas which sees repeated incidents of theft and vandalism, which places strain on our resources and delays service restoration.‘We are prioritising repair and maintenance work in the area, in addition to LED upgrades within the broader district. The City is also exploring high-tech infrastructure protection solutions to take back our infrastructure from vandals who seek to steal and destroy our infrastructure. <figure class="subtopic-fullsize-img"> <img class="responsive" src="https://resource.capetown.gov.za/cityassets/Media%20Images%202/DSC_7826.jpg" alt="" style="width:965px;" /></figure>‘While our Energy Safety teams and City Law Enforcement officials continue to maintain visibility in hotspot areas, we call on residents to be our eyes and ears and to assist us in protecting our power infrastructure. Reporting vandalism and illegal activities helps us to respond faster and ensures that residents and all communities benefit from reliable electricity services,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Energy, Alderman Xanthea Limberg.
