Industry specific regulations and organisations
If you work in any of the below fields, please ensure that you are aware of the regulations governing your industry, and the relevent bodies you need to be registered with.
Town Planning
The
Planning Profession Act (Act 36 of 2002) provides for the registration of planners and identifies their various areas of work. It also aims to protect the public from unethical planning practices, maintain a high standard of professional conduct, and establish disciplinary mechanisms and an appeal board.
Architecture
The
Architectural Profession (Act 44 of 2000) provides for the registration of professionals, candidates and the specified categories in the architectural profession. Since 1 July 2006, anyone practicing architecture or submitting architectural building plans to Council must be registered with the
South African Council for the Architectural Profession (SACAP) in one of the following categories:
- Professional Architect (PrArch)
- Professional Senior Architectural Technologist (PrSArchT)
- Professional Architectural Technologist (PrArchT)
- Professional Draughtsperson (PrArchDraught)
Engineering
Registration with the
Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) ensures that engineers meet the minimum requirements expected of a professional person as set out in the
Engineering Profession Act (Act 46 of 2000).
Home Builders
The
Housing Consumers Protection Measures Act (95 of 1998) provides protection for housing consumers against defects in a new home and failures of home builders to comply with their obligations in terms of this Act. It also establishes and promotes ethical and technical standards of home building as well as regulates the industry through
The National Home Builders Registration Council.
