Focus on baboons
Why baboons are important to Cape Town

We have to respect baboons, understanding that they are just trying to adapt to changes in their natural environment, but we also need to be careful of them since they are powerful animals and can be unpredictable. Baboons belong here as much as we do. By acting responsibly, we can continue to enjoy living next door to these charismatic creatures.

Baboons are also popular with visitors to Cape Town. Nature-based tourism is a big part of our multi-billion Rand tourism industry. More importantly, baboons play a vital role in our natural ecosystem. During their foraging for food, they aerate (introduce air into) the soil, and scattered seeds and bulbs are able to germinate and grow into new plants.

The Chacma baboon, an icon of the Cape Peninsula, forms part of our rich biodiversity and natural heritage.

Fast fact

In Cape Town, the few remaining baboon troops of the Peninsula are restricted to living on or around Table Mountain National Park or in the Hottentots Holland Mountain ranges. The peninsula’s baboons are especially vulnerable and are completely surrounded by human habitation. This makes them isolated and can threaten their genetic diversity. The Cape Peninsula baboons are the only formally protected baboon population in South Africa.

When baboons become a problem

Many of our residential areas are near or next to natural environments where baboons thrive. As the city expands we encroach on the baboons’ territory and this can lead to human/baboon conflict.

Baboons like our food
Fynbos is low in protein and nutrients and it takes a lot of effort for the baboons to sustain themselves on this diet. It’s much easier for baboons to find more nutritious food from a dustbin than to forage. When baboon troops have access to human food, their population density increases by up to five times compared to natural fynbos foraging troops.

Be wary of aggressive baboons
Old male baboons, dispersing young sub-adult baboons, or female baboons protecting their young offspring, can be aggressive. Young dispersing males naturally move between troops to prevent interbreeding and may end up near urban areas as they look for food. Grumpy old male baboons no longer in leadership roles can also be aggressive towards what they see as a threat in these environments, such as a human or barking dog.

People, especially tourists, feed baboons
People have, especially in the past, fed baboons at stopping points near natural reserves and parks. This has encouraged baboons to seek out human food. Baboons may become aggressive in an effort to get more food from you. Feeding baboons also teaches bad habits that may ultimately lead to the animals death (usually by euthanasia).

You may want to read or download a pamphlet for more information on baboons.

Fast fact

Feeding baboons is punishable by law!
